Odds Of Finding A Doubled Die

If you want to find one visible to the naked eye as you flip through a bunch of coins, well, that's probably not going to happen in your lifetime. Finding doubling takes more examination, and in most cases some type of magnification.

Earle42, you are exactly the person I needed to talk to! Perfect answer, it's making a lot more sense now. I thought I had been through a lot of Kennedy's lol.

I went through 10 boxes of pennies to find 2 legit DDOs. Granted as I went through those boxes and did more research about errors and varieties I've learned a lot so far but have lots more to learn. I expect to find more doubled dies as I go through more boxes and learn here around people that are extremely knowledgeable!

1977-D A bit rougher to see in my lousy pic (old pic), and also not as prominent as the others. But I was able to see this by eye. I did find it first under a microscope because I was running a bunch through, but I immediately took it out to look at it and see how good/bad the doubling looked in hand.


one to look for, if you can go through a lot of junk silver at a coin shop or get some rolls maybe from APMEX is the 1964 and 1964-D. Some of these are incredible to see. I found mine in a roll of silver ones I had put away as a kid.



I have found 7 total of these and kept 5 b/c of different FG varieties and RPMs on them. Sorry I do not know the number of halves I went through to find these as I was not keeping records at the time, and they were in a large collection of 1964 half rolls I had access to in the past.

n the silver quarters don't forget to look for the type B REV from 56-64. This was a proof rev used to make circulation coins.

Once you see one a couple of them side by side with a normal REV, the type Bs stand out rather clearly. They don;t show the normal REV on this sight, but with the normal one the E and S fo STATES touch. Before I had found one, I just kept telling myself to see if I thought an ant would be able to crawl between the letters. When I found one it made sense as to what I was looking for.

Things like this and the 64 DDOs likely can be picked from a local coin shop's silver melt pile. I know my local store said he just does not have the time to check for them. so if you find something in the silver melt - its no difference in price!

Now compare the space between the E and S in STATES with the pics of the type B REV at that link I posted above. You will see how your letters are almost touching since its a normal RE. Seeing the two will give you a better idea on ID'ing the different types.

I remember when I was found out about the REV types, I kept questioning myself as to if what I was finding was a type B or not...until I found one. The type B REV just about stood up and announced to me it was certainly a Type B when I saw it

I'll post anything I find tomorrow when I go through them. I think that type B will be an easier one to identify than everything else I've been looking for
