I received the coin today and have taken a few photos. When held at an angle is certainly looks to have reflective proof surfaces to me, but they are hard to capture with my camera. I'll keep trying to see if I can take a photo that shows the reflective surfaces.

The area around the V on the reverse is toned a light blue and not really reflective like the rest of the coin.

It is an exceptionally clean coin with no noticeable marks on either side.

A couple more photos shot at angles, with the coin in a 2x2 flip, trying to capture the proof fields.

The mark on the second photo is on the flip and not the coin.

I will keep trying to get a good photo.

Anyway to get a phone cam...uploaded to youtube to solidify it...because the flash should give it away automatically....and if there's any doubt the video would show.

A video is a great idea. Having never posted anything on YouTube, I will need to recruit my adult daughter to help me.

(Cue embarrassed eye rolls from her as she bemoans her technology-challenged father.)

I fiddled around with my phone today to try and see how to rotate the coins and how to use the best lighting. When I get it figured out I'll shoot a video of this coin and also an 1890 Indian Head I bought two years ago which I also believe is a proof.

Rims squared off?

Edge seems rounded in the photos.

Looks proof to me. You could always send it off to be 100% sure.

The rims looked squared off to me.

I'm going to have my daughter give me a hand with the video later today.

Yes, I think this one is worthwhile submitting. I only paid $89 for it. It was listed as a proof and I was surprised the bidding didn't go higher.

$89 bucks is a steal. Had you let me know earlier I could have tagged it to the end of the submission to PCGS I sent out saturday

I was shocked at the final price. My high bid was a LOT more than that. As I've said, even if it is a business strike it's still a great deal and probably worth having slabbed.

Not a proof.

Note how much stronger the strike is on a proof? Texture also on the design.

That is an amazing coin.

When I compare the 1883 to my slabbed proof 1901 the surfaces on the 1883, while reflective, are nothing compared to the mirror surfaces on the 1901.

So, perhaps, it is a business strike. I appreciate all the replies to my question.

I still think it is worth the money to send it in along with some other coins I'd like to have graded and slabbed.

Looks like an impaired proof from an old cleaning, maybe PR53 I'd give it a value of around $80-110 - my Two Cents, on it, I look forward to finding out what a TPG says. So I'd say you paid right in the ball park of it's value.
