It might, a lot of that looks like dirt, but I doubt it will ever be pretty. If it's damage from something acidic acetone isn't going to do much.

Btw I don't believe putting a coin in acetone considered "dipping".

Pure Acetone is not considered " dipping" and is safe on silver coinage. When someone refers to dipping, they are referring to products like MS70, ezest, etc.
Wont do the coin any harm by soaking in acetone ( but it also may not remove everything you want it to).

Acetone won't hurt it, but it's also highly unlikely to improve that coin.

with Zurie. Also, I don't believe MS70 is considered a dip; it's more of a detergent.

Thanks all for the terminology discussion. I might give it a shot anyway just to get a feel for what kind of difference it makes.

@John1, Thanks, the posts just flew by.... what kind of contest?

Acetone cannot mettle with the metal of your medal (or coin).

Since it does not cannot remove any surface metal, even at a microscopic level, putting a coin in acetone is a conservation technique. Its similar o giving a coin a rinse in water to remove residue from it if you accidentally spilled Pepsi on a coin.

The only caution for acetone I have ever heard of is some CCF members have said if you soak a copper coin for awhile in acetone while in direct sunlight, a pinkish hue may result.

I have used pure acetone on hundreds of coins over the years and no ill results.

Xylene would be he next step since it can remove thing acetone may leave behind. This info came originally form BadThad on this forum. He is the creator of verdi-care.

. I've also had great results with Xylene on silver, no issues at all. But as Earle cautioned with acetone on copper, I would say the same with xylene on copper.

I also don't think acetone will do anything for this coin.

Acetone will cost you very little and the results could be worth a lot to you.
