Why not take the money you would spend on all those common dates and buy the 77 and 09 S first....

This is another recommended method of collecting a set -- any set.
Buy the keys first and buy the best you can afford.
They are the coins most likely to go up in value first and for the greatest amount.
It may limit you to one coin per year (or longer) but will work out to be the best in the long term.

That "buy the keys first" method may work for some, but for me it always felt a little anticlimactic.

Buy the keys would go to slow for my liking.

I can understand that. Buying the keys first goes very slow and you collection stays small for so long. It's the way I am collecting now. I only have 24 coins in my collection and will probably add one, 2 more at the most this year. It's hard saving for the next one with so many lower priced coins out there, but I pick a date and save till I can get one. It seems to work out for me.
As an example here is my lowly 24 coin collection.

I buy the keys last, basically due to cost. I have a full date set of Flying Eagle to IHC in G to AU. I have a semi slabbed set in VF to MS but it's not complete. I also have a set of IHC that I consider as 2nds. My eventual goal is to have 2 full sets, one a slabbed set in nothing lower than VF (except maybe the 1877), and another in an album that I may upgrade over time.

The way I did it is by buying a group when they become available , the below came available a few days ago, look for something like this as a start.

He has a set of 12 coins in VF to AU for $60

I agree! It must be fun to pull those coins out and look at them now and again.

Out of curiosity - what is the next coin or two on your list?

I don't want to highjack Oldfordmans thread so I'll start my own in a bit about my collection.
Sorry Oldfordman. Let us know how your IHC is going once started. I have none but they will be on my list.

I'm not a collector of Plastic so I have no slabbed coins. Also, I think you said Folder not Album. Are they Folders? If so, I suggest changing to Albums.

A Whitman. Don't know what you classify it as.

IHC's are my favorite, and I might be a bit obsessed.
I am working on a NGC certified set of MS-62 or better, with 44 of 61.
A set in a Capital Plastics wall display with all coins Fine or better, with 58 of 60.
A collectors board framed and wall mounted in any condition from Poor to AU with 56 of 58.
Primary Dansco album with all coins Fine or better, with 55 of 60
Secondary Dansco, any grade, with 52 of 60.
Third tier Dansco, any grade, 30 of 60.

Just remembered that this is all basically in my signature, but totals not updated in a long time.
The only ones I don't have in any set are: 1860 pointed bust and 1877.
The different number of potential coins in each set is due to some albums/boards/displays listing different varieties. The NGC set lists the most options.
