Spence, I think you misunderstood my analysis. I see what you are talking about. You are drawing an imaginary line vertically from the front of the serifs to the F in "OF". That is not what I was trying to describe. If you extend the lines horizontally from the bottom of the D to the word "ONE", you will see the lower line runs into the middle leg of the "E" in ONE while the upper line runs between the middle leg and the opening above it. That was how I was taught to identify this many moons ago. This is what is evident from the link you provided too.

Ya thank you all. Not a problem with the refund. Dang it though. I knew to bring it here. See what y'all had to say. I just was crossing fingers the D was ok. Man I held onto that for. Bit not wanting to hear the bad news lol. Seriously thank you guys. If I go to buying a real one I this I will get it already slabbed.
@ Mrwhatisit. I'm now jealous of yours lol. Seriously thanks. Hope my 1917 S type one is better news. I will get that posted bit later.

Glad to hear that returning this won't be a problem @minni! Also, thx to @mist for clarifying about the mintmark. I understand now. Thx!

Ok it was zero issues on the return. He also had a 1916 D slabbed. So this one is certified. Saves me money and blew me away he had another one. I thought I would never find one regardless the condition. Condition is not what I want, but I do own one now. $560 and got money back from the fake.

That would be die 1 position, glad you found one but the price is a bit high in my opinion for the grade.

I agree with macmercury, $560 is AG-3 money

I am surprised to see so much of the mintmark on a coin with as much wear and graded FR-2. You would expect the lower part of the mint mark to be somewhat invisible but at least the orientation is correct and verified as genuine. Even though it is a lowball example, congrats on a tough coin to acquire.

I thought as well, but I set is complete for now until or if I can afford or find a replacement. I'm ok with the price seeing he refunded me the money for the other and taking a loss on it. Awesome set is complete minus the 42/1. Hey good looking out on the mint mark placement. I question the mint mark because of the difference in how the D was worn less then the field around it. Thanks to all and well daughter is getting married so guess I'm off to sell it for that now. Be safe and thank you again.

Nice pickup! Congrats on the complete set. I am glad that everything worked out and that you found a genuine example.

I completed mine when I bought the 16-D earlier this year. And to answer shatsi, FR-02 means the Sheldon grading scale of fair 2 on a scale of 1-70, 2 FR-02 being on the quite low end of the grading scale.

Actually, I don't include those since I call them errors and varieties.
