It's a woody! NICE COIN!
100% genuine, great pictures. Looks to have a few tinges of red still. If there's cartwheel luster under the brown...

I think this is an attractive cent, but I understand why someone who is going to spend big money on a key date wouldn't want an anomalous example. I would enjoy having this one in my Dansco.

Definitely genuine. Die #4 woody. Dot between D and B in correct location.
Difficult to grade obverse picture, but could be a little rub on jaw.

Sorry to exhume such an old post, but I finally got around to getting this one graded. Shortly after when I originally posted this I went through some tough times for several months in part due to a layoff, so having coins graded wasn't high on the priority list. As such, I finally got this coin graded by ANACS back in January of this year.
AU50.
Granted my photos in the OP were not great, but this coin is well above 50. I could see it being a slider, but not this low. I wonder if the wood grain worked against it?
Since then, I sent it back to ANACS for a second opinion along with a bunch of coins that I wanted to conserve anyway. Oddly enough, they chose not to conserve any of the 37 other coins and did not change the grade on this one. They just sent me all of my coins back without touching a single one. I mostly wanted to get it authenticated, so that was a win at least. At this point I want to send it to either PCGS or NGC. Would it benefit me more to try to cross it over in the slab or send it in raw? I'll try to take better photos if possible, but not sure how to handle the glare from the slab that it is now in.

I'm not a grader but I think you are right about the woody effecting the grade. I like woodys, but it's hard to get past the wood grain to grade them.

The woody effect in general detracts from a straight grade on a coin. It never adds to the grade.

tough call on AU50. but through a holder and poor photos its hard to tell if that grade is accurate. based on what I'm seeing the coin looked considerably better than that. maybe its not a woody and those are scratches?  can you post better photos? |

"Copper coins are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Since copper is a very active metal, there are many copper coins that we cannot treat. Personally I would send it in the slab as a crossover. Seems like you have less to lose that way - it's already authenticated with a straight grade. Maybe try posting better images here first. |

I don't think PCGS or NGC will do crossover from ANACs. I know NGC will remove from an ANACs holder if you sign their removal auth form.
If you do plan to send it in to PCGS, you'll need to crack it out of the ANACs holder and send it in raw.

Whoops, looks like it is just NGC that will not crossover from anyone other than PCGS. NGC blurb: Quote:
Coins holdered by other grading services are not eligible for CrossOver and must be removed from their holders and submitted raw (not holdered), or they may be submitted in their holders if they are accompanied by NGC's Consent to Remove Coin(s) from Holder(s) Form. |

Edit: Sorry, we posted at the same time. That's not what PCGS says. https://www.pcgs.com/crossover"SUBMIT Your pre-graded and sealed coins from a third party service such as NGC, ANACS, ICG or other for PCGS Crossover" NGC does say that they only crossover PCGS, and others must be removed from holders first. "Coins graded by services other than PCGS are not eligible for the CrossOver service. They must be removed from their holder prior to being graded." Maybe you had the two mixed up? Edited by kbbpll
