Clipped Coin | Spanish-Colonial 1 Real

We should probably clarify how big your coin is. All Spanish-Colonial coins, from the 8 reales down to the half-real, had the same design, and we can't tell which is which from just a picture.

"Two bits" is American slang for a quarter, and derives from the Spanish-Colonial 2 reales coin which was likewise a quarter of a Spanish dollar of 8 reales. I suspect your coin is about the size of a quarter, and what you've got is a Spanish-Colonial 2 reales that's had a couple of pieces cut off it. In other words, a "clipped two bits".

At a "bit less than a nickel" in size, it's probably a 1 real coin. So it's not a "clipped two bits", it's a "clipped bit".

I found it in a desk I bought at auction, along with 59 other coins!

This is Carolus IIII (Carlos IV) silver real coin, mintmark and value is cut so only size can determine value. It looks like 1806 date.

Reign of this King was from 1788-1808

worth its silver content.
