Other than the weight or sound of it, it'd probably be easy to pass-off person to person. The crooks are probably selling rolls for like $3-5. It's pretty cleaver really, unlike passing high dollar currency, it someone notices it, chances are you could just shurg it off and say "I don't know, I got it in change". I doubt anyone would call the police.....it's only a quarter.
The only real chance of busting someone is with a roll scam. Where someone really brave (and stupid) puts real quarters on the ends and trys to cash it in at a bank. Teller opens a roll to check and BAM....busted.
I hope they nail whoever is dealing and making these!

Bad Thad,
If the weight mix is right, then they could feed them into machines as real quarters. If they will pass person to person, then I bet they will pass a bank teller too. I just don't see the point. So you can take 82 cents worth or metal and make it worth $6.50, but look at the time it would take and energy along with those related expenses.
I don't know where you would buy 91.67 copper/8.33 nickel mix, plus they are layers, so you are going to have to figure all that junk out.
Like I said, someone smart enough to do this... could make more money doing a real job.

it also could be someone who HAD a real job...as an artist or engraver then lost it. that could be their form of silent protest or revenge. or just a quick and easy way to make 10 bucks at a time.

My Wife found it for me as a Christmas Present a few years ago.. I think the coin shown is one from a broken seat. Or it came from the place where they make the seats.

As long as we're posting toilet pictures...here's the photo my help took of me on the day I finally decided it was time to close my plumbing company. Unfortunately, after better than 4 years of semi-retirement it looks like the economic downturn is going to push me back into plumbing again. I hope I don't run into another job like this anytime soon........
