I'm sure not cheating, I'd say MS66+ die polish does not affect the grade, that is what I see on this coin, no sign of cleaning nor any ticks, spotting, etc. tons of luster even a + grade may be warranted. It's a monster coin. Quote: Ty2020b -Sure looks dipped to me. Probably, if so it was expertly dipped, most blast white coins from pre 1950 have been dipped at least once by now. If so the person that did the dip was really good at preserving the luster while removing only toning or tarnish. It takes a certain eye for that, I don't have it - wish I did. I've messed up a couple of walkers that I wish I could take back the dip on, now I only use acetone on coins. Why would it matter if people cheat? They are only cheating themselves. I have looked at ten's if not hundreds of thousands of coins over the decades, and even worked for a TPG for a short time. I pride myself on my abilities of grading US coinage. I'm certainly not infallible though, and can always learn - that's the fun in playing the guess the grade, and even if I'm not in agreement with a TPG I usually feel my grade is the correct one and they got it wrong. Though it's really impossible to fairly grade coins from static photos it really needs to be in hand in a controlled lighted environment to be accurately graded by anyone, professional or amateur.

Quote: Ever since I found out people actually cheat like you just did, it's not as fun. The ironic thing is that instead of just trying to grade this coin, you are the one who went out and spent time searching for it. Then by accusing me of "cheating", ruined the reveal for anyone who reads this thread before grading the coin. (Assuming that I did guess it right, based on your relentless accusations.) I am on this forum to learn from people much smarter and experienced than me. @NumismaticsFTW I hope you can find the fun in this again. I am done with this conversation and I hope this thread can return to being about that awesome quarter!

I'd be at MS-66 on this one. Some minor chatter on Liberty's face.

On the level that coin is at, its really hard to grade from some pictures. Can you really discern a MS-66 from a -67 or -68 without having it in hand and a magnifying glass?
Anyway, the die polishing lines are great, really cool.

Anyway, the die polishing lines are great, really cool. Well...potentially not, and there is a reason that multiple graders assess coins whilst in the grading process at TPG. Grading is subjective. But, it's just a bit of numismatic forum fun :)

Quote: Can you really discern a MS-66 from a -67 or -68 without having it in hand and a magnifying glass? if the photos are good enough its possible to tell a 66 from a 67. as a generalization 66's can have some fine marks on them and maybe some weakness in strike. some series its easier than others. going from 67 to 68 is another matter in and of itself probably just a guess. in fact taking a second look at the first photos I now see some marks along the cheek area running from the back of the eye to the jaw and marks along the front of the neck that I missed since they are only visible on the one shot. they are enough imo to keep it from a 67 grade and probably the reason that no one here graded it a 67. so in this case, its a pretty good guess that the coin is stronger than a 65 but cant make 67. by process of elimination 66 seems to be the likely grade

I recently stopped participating due to this.
Raw coins or coins not available to cheat, I'll guess the grade.
But people attempting to gain merit this way, that's actual comedy. You have no grounds to call out a CCF member for cheating on the grade. A grade on the coin of 67 is not unreasonable. A lot of members who know the grade on a certain coin will disqualify themselves at guessing the grade. Guess the grade is a way to improve grading skills, and any member cheating is only cheating themselves. I am at MS64.

I just looked it up on ebay and I was a little surprised that NGC gave the coin a star with all the die polish lines.

Slider! Don't reveal stuff until the grade is revealed. Anyway, here you go. I didn't actually realise this was on ebay, I found it on David Lawrence rare coins and I had a good look and I thought it was 66 like a lot of you guessed. Overpriced for the coin inside the holder? at $72,800...I think so. Also, a star, maybe NGC liked the die polish lines...

I would've taken a guess, but I already knew the grade since I was bidding on Barber quarters on the vendor's official website this past weekend.

Now that it's revealed... the star was not included in the MS67 guess, so it was technically wrong. If someone was cheating to earn brownie points, they would have "guessed" accurately. I believe an apology is in order.

I just opened this thread and my initial thought was at least MS66 and, since the coin was singled out for display, possibly MS67. I suppose the cameo effect garnered the star. I wouldn't know how to "look up" most of these offerings even if I wanted to and rarely offer a grade via post - personally evaluating my grading after the reveal. I think @ericgreen's guess was an honest one and not unreasonable.
