Couple hundred grant is too low for this set, especially in todays' climate of coin mania and inflation. I expect a minimum $1,000,000.

Set should never be broken up.
With aggressive marketing, could well pass the upper estimate of $500k.

Beautiful set of coins - thats a great start on a 19th century proof type set in one date.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

Quote: thats a great start on a 19th century proof type set in one date Only missing a few for that project, Half Cent, Large Cent, Two Cent Piece, Three Cent Silver, Half Dime, Twenty Cent Piece, a Seated dollar, Trade dollar, and possibly the Stella $4 gold? (Unless that is counted as a pattern, which I think it should be). Then there are the Motto and No Motto Seated coinage varieties, the Bust coinage would be tough to get, bust dime, quarter and half in proof would be expensive as well as other varieties of proof gold, am I missing any of the top of my head for other proof 18th century coinage? Not counting the Stella (pattern) or Motto varieties, that's only 8 more coins, doable I think.

Holy cow! I wasn't expecting all of the gold proofs as well. Wow.
Anyone feeling brave and putting in a bid at say, $250k, just for kicks knowing you won't win?

If I had the mad money to buy that set I would toss the Spink's case, crack them all out and return them to the original holder .

WOW! It just sold for $560,000 or $672,000 with the juice - sel_69l I guess they had the aggressive marketing, or just prices these days are really high, on really original coins.

That's crazy! I wonder when this set will come to market again. Maybe not for another generation!

The PF-64 to 66 grades held the set back somewhat. American collectors would have jumped over themselves to get at it, if they had all been in absolute pristine FDC (Fleur De Coin) condition.
Still, in the current inflation financial climate $560k, with fees and taxes on top of that, is OK.
