It seems there's no cladding on the coin.

Welcome to the forum this is a find I have never heard of and I have been told the rare stuff to look for by metalman for the last few monthsit would be a lot better to look at if you had a better pic.

The quarter looks like it was struck on a planchet which
split before strike. These would be a little more valuable
than one split after strike. In 1965 the process to bond
the three strips of metal which comprise the clad coin had
hardly been perfected. They pushed the sheets of metal to-
gether under very high pressure and detonated dynamite above
them to complete the bonding. Until 1968 it was not uncommon
for the clad to separate before or after being struck.

You'd need an error expert for valuation but I'd guess it
would be in the $50 area. A states quarter like this is quite
valuable.

There are other things it could be and a coin can't be auth-
enticated or graded from a picture, of course.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree with Cladking. It looks like the outer layers are missing and were missing prior to striking. If you have a macro setting on your camera, you can take clearer pics so that we can see the detail. I'd really like to see clear pics of this one.

Im not sure that we can assess a split planchet without a clear pic of the edge of the coin and a weight?

does your coin look similar to this one ?

There are a few different ways that the clad layer can be removed or even copper plated to resemble a coin that is missing the clad layer.

Thank you Metalman for those picture. My coin look exactly like what you on picture but it is a 1965 coin instead of 1993. The edge of the coin is really thin and it still have great definition like it was brand new. Well hopefully someone can help me with this information. Thank you everyone for sharing you opion. I do really appreciate all the help.

Hi Lastdevil

There is really not much more that can be told from a picture and Description.

Can you give us a very exact weight of the coin ?

Rick

i can be either of the said suggestions I think it may be a penny planchet wich is why it is so thin . which I think might be more possible the clad panchet. Its is classified as I-E-2 (rarity level unknown) no value established. with clad layer missing is classified as an I-D-6 rarity level 5-6 worth $35. approx. but cant tell with out the weight an with out seeing it. worth holding on to but you most likely wont get rich

You need to take clearer pictures - pictures tell us more than what you can attempt to describe.

There is another option for the copper US 25 cent coin that I didn't see mentioned. In 1999, there were numerous reports of rolls of counterfeit copper quarters turning up in Southeastern Massachusetts. The reports made the newspapers because some of the coins were dipped in Mercury to make them look like nickel. The reports took the form of a "Hazardous" materials warning. They were being passed in various locations by an elderly couple as payment for meals etc. One roll seems to be the largest group passed. According to the reports I read they were well executed copies from transfer dies and were made to look worn to about VF - EF. They came in several dates but the forgers made the mistake of making an old style 1999 version. They apparently didn't know about the change to the State Quarter series. This error immediately called attention to their work and got the Secret Service involved. I never heard a followup saying they were apprehended. I also never heard a total number attached to this forgery operation. I mention this because the mercury would easily come off the forgery leaving a fairly clean struck copper coin with no evidence of their ever being a clad layer.
