I also thought 12-I, but there are 13-I and 17-I on Heritage and I don't know how to ID the obverse type. Here are the 12-I sold on Heritage https://coins.ha.com/c/search-resul...h-A-K-071316I don't know how to grade these - somewhere in the G-VG range? |

Not my area of collecting anymore, but I don't recall seeing those horizontal ridges before. @khun, can you please carefully remove from the 2x2 and re-photograph. Maybe those are on the clear plastic window rather than the coin. I'm also interested in the odd strip of different color from the top to about 3 o'clock on the obverse. Finally, that would also let you get an accurate weight for us. Thx.

At first I thought those striations were one the coin but you can see them above the coin in the reverse image. Photograph the edge too when it's out of the holder and let's make sure there's no seam.

All in all, as Massachusetts Coppers come, it's OK
For quick variety confirmation: the I reverse of 1788 has the only date configuration like that, and the 12 obverse has the feather-end of the arrow under the left stand of E. The 13 obv has it to the right, and the 17 to the left. Nice coin, and a planchet error too

The only thing that I can contribute here is that it's a low grade coin. I was surprised to find that there were millions of these made. However, PCGS has some really nice values on these even at the lower grades. I read that you inherited your coins but, how did some of these get to such a small, seemingly isolated Country located between France and Spain? Was a relative from the States? Interesting! |

Maybe VG details; the obverse blows-out at the rim on later strikes. See the top coin in the Stack's link of the 12-I posted earlier for a similar example

dsking: funny you should ask... I was talking with "The Guy Who Wrote The Massachusetts Copper Book (but he won't publish)" about the 1787 2-F Transposed Arrows Cent. The 2 obverse was later married with traditional reverses, but it is the only obverse die that used large letter punches. He thinks that this was the first Cent type struck, and that the vast majority of the issue was exported to Islands far away from Boston, as many have been recovered where you would never expect to see any.

Interesting!"Actually I'm from the US but spent most of my working career overseas, and eventually retired in Andorra. Other than for selling coins on ebay, it's a terrific place to live! OldGrouchyGuy! That was great info. It's making more sense now why they're overseas. Thanks! khunchang! Andorra looks like a very peaceful place to retire! Good for you! We retired to Montana from the ever growing Colorado. We're so glad that we left. Montana is a bit of a hot spot right now but, newbies will dwindle when they realize that we have very, very long winters!  We live in a Valley and it's seems that most snowstorms go right over us! I collect Colonials and have a couple of these. I put it at F.
Problem free, as struck flan. Couple rim issues but would not call your example a problem coin.

 with vermontensium it's not a bad example at all considering how so many of these have severe planchet flaws before they are even struck as coins. Fine is right on IMO. There is a decent but hard to find book on them "Massachusetts coppers : a comprehensive analysis and attribution guide of Massachusetts Colonial coppers" by Michael A. Demling, edited by Ray Williams that came out in 2015 it is a small format (6" x 5") or (8.5" x 11") spiral bound, I have the smaller book found on ebay cheap last year, worth it IMO. I know the ANS has a copy of it library. Another good reference that is free and covers most all Colonial Coinage is Notre Dame, this link goes to the MA copper page intro, there are a few pages on them and a listing of reference materials at the bottom of the page.
