Quote: I think it's the cent, too, but in a way it's odd because it's not used that much in daily transactions. It isn't that the new pennies take a beating, or that they wear out. It just doesn't take much to make them look awful. They fingerprint easily, get a small ding or two, and then they start turning blotchy. So my opinion is an answer to this question: "Which coins seem to show the most use after the least amount of time?" rather than the "beating" question posed in the subject line of the topic.

Quote: wheezydog: "(Quarters) make a great "tip" for the waitress." The day that the DC Quarters came out, I took a friend out to a nice uptown Italian restaurant, just an hour after I went to the Denver Mint. I tipped the waitress with a BU roll of DC Quarters, because I lacked a $10 bill after my Mint visit. Waitpersons are always happy to get $1 notes and Quarters!

Quarters certainly get banged around by more vending machines and such, but pennies are a lot more likely to sit in a parking lot and get run over a bunch of times, stuck to things with bubble gum, dipped in soda or ketchup, thrown into wishing wells, fired out of slingshots... and of course, Zincolns are about as durable as cheese.
I've got a cup full of Lincs that I know are too wrecked to go through the bank's coin counter properly... You really don't see quarters as messed-up as that.

I choose the golden dollar because even thought they don't circulated that much, when I get one in change they are scratched up, lost all of their colar and are dark.

I voted the Sac/Pres dollar. The plating on them discolors even in storage.

I voted quarter based on how often it is used.

Quote: wheezydog: LOL DNA! A whole roll! I just meant a quarter tip! If there's one thing I do, I leave proper (20%+) tips. Years ago, I had a waiter totally screw up our entire table's orders, and he profusely apologized and said that I did not have to leave a tip. I gave him $1 for honesty! I would rather leave no tip than just 25¢, an amount that low is just plain spiteful....

I live in New England and I'll tell you, I've seen some Cents that were hardly recognizable. They rot out from the inside and really do not survive well through a Winter on the street. ~ Jim

I say its the quarter due to the amount of usage.

Although Quarters get the most use, Zincolns LOOK like they get the most use. And with the looks of some of the halves I've seen roll searching, they could have been added to this poll. Alot of the later dates look like a brinks truck turned over on I-95 and they were run over repeatedly by trucks!
