Yup, the US mint started putting the edge notch in 2021 for security. Each year they move it to a new location on the edge. But it's really not a very secure feature compared to the great security features on the Canada Maple Leaf and Britannia. I've seen a YouTube video showing a fake silver eagle with the edge notch.
As others said use gloves to handle these, leaving fingerprints can reduce the value some when you sell them.

I had to google Monster Box of Silver to get a cost idea. Wow! Double WOW!
So what exactly is the purpose for this kind of purchase? If just bullion why not buy bars?
Please, someone enlighten me!

ASE are the most popular legal tender bullion in the world. Historically their premiums have not been real high but usually higher than generic rounds or bars. During Covid ASE premiums skyrocketed, sometimes up to about $10 - $12 per ounce. Premiums have since come down but will likely always be more than rounds or bars. You pay higher premium buying them but when you sell you will get more for them too. ASE are very liquid, easy to sell. A lot of collectors like to buy them and have them graded/slabbed or buy them already graded/slabbed. They are a collectible coin to them, not just bullion.

The last time I saw Anything like the OP's First Picture, was at a Coin Show. I had to speak up, People who Enter a Hobby or Subject, Have No Clue as to The Proper ways to handle Coins, Medals, Currency, etc... PS, The person who was Mis Handling the Silver dollars for sale was Jingling them around in his hands, banging them together, He was talking the Entire time.They were " Morgans and Peace Silver Dollars ", VF- AU. About $12.00 each Then...  I spoke up and said, Are you aware your Destroying those coins, He stated, I might buy them..... The dealer did not care, I Did... If your not buying them, Please stop banging them around.... He Put them down, .... People Have No Clue!! Best Wishes. |

Nice little stack of now cull, fingerprinted silver.
But that missing reed is an intentional 'part' of a new security feature placed on these coins - the rest of the security features have not been released.
