There might be glue on the surface creating that raised area. Use pure acetone to speak in and see if it come off

I've soaked coins in acetone for up to two full days, with success (if the targeted gunk was soluble...).

What does the reverse look like?

An accurate weight to two decimal places would be good to know.

Agree, looks like a foreign substance.

I once left a coin in for two months (glass jar with top to prevent evaporation) to verify, and be able to tell others, it does not harm the coin.

If acetone does not work then xylene most likely will. Xylene also cannot physically or chemically interact with the coins metal.

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions I will try to let it soak for a good amount of time. I will update with weights after that. Should I make a new thread or just respond to this post.

It may be a substance that acetone won't dissolve. The thing that bothers me is near the rim at about 1 o'clock, there appears the be part of a letter that is correctly oriented. I don't know what to make of it. Maybe better minds will prevail.

Nevermind. Full obverse vs. the closeup shows that the part letter is an illusion.

I will try to get better pics but the lines appear to be cracks so I don't see how it would be a substance on it. The strip that is a half circle is depressed and not raised I am unable to tell about the area on the face of the portrait.

Might have been an acidic substance that ate away at the clad layer a bit. PMD not a mint error.

John1 just out of curiosity and thirst for knowledge, how did you come about your assessment. I am by no way doubting your answer I am just looking for a better understanding to know what I am looking at/for when checking further coins. If you ever have the time I would love it if you could share some of your knowledge with me.

Just using my imagination and seeing a ton of coins over the years.
That assessment was just one of many possibilities.

If something like Coca Cola was on this coin and dried on the surface,
it would most definitely etch the metal to look like your coin.
I used to buy (2) 2 liter bottles of Coke and pour into a tub and soak my
cymbals in that overnight and they would come out looking brand new again.

Etched by some substance.

With my imagination, I don't even want to know what that means.
