What an interesting topic - I'll have to think on this for a bit before answering (besides - I have dinner cooking right now)

While I'll never say never my current collecting philosophy won't allow me to spend that much. That's not to say I wouldn't spend that much, I recently got a 2024 Mustang Convertible which is as much a frivolous purchase as a $50k coin, but spending that much in one coin is not something I can see my self doing. The Mustang is also more fun than a coin.

Thanks @brandmeister!
I was going to buy it when silver hit $100 an ounce but I decided not to wait so long.

@hfjacinto Very nice car you got there! I bet it's a lot of fun to drive! But can you put it in your pocket like a coin?

Yours may be a hypothetical question, but you can get some great ideas at the website of one of the CCF members: https://fairfaxcoins.com/

I lived in Fairfax City, VA for 33 years. Fairfax Coins is a really nice high end coin shop, been there many times.

Thank you all for the excellent inputs! I need to educate myself more on the suggested options, and US coins in general. Being frugal, whatever I decide to purchase, will probably try to bid on a reputable auction with hopes of getting a discounted price. Obviously, will not be a "signature coin" that has all the bidding attention on (under $50K it's unlikely to be one anyway), but some much lesser key date or grade coin. The Nixon presentation Ike dollar is very interesting, but since it's provenance (as far as I know) is not yet verified, I do not know of the current price reflects that. Seems like a lottery, which ever way it turns out (if ever). @Tacc I am in Alexandria, VA. There is a coin shop near Main st, Fairfax that I visited a couple of times with a NJ copper question. So first I thought that's the one, but it seems this "Fairfax Coins" is in Manassas and they only work on appointments. So will keep them in mind because one can look at the coins in person if deciding the purchase. Chain cents are my current favorites as far as looks, but I am worried about the copper degrading if not stored correctly. I do not have a serious storage setup, and who wants to have to have it stored elsewhere where you cannot look at it when you want to? So most likely will look for silver or gold, unless some great bargain shows up. The Meiji coins is certainly one interesting path to explore as their price-to-rarity ratio seems much lower than US coins'. There was also a coin dealer online who talked about 1872cc, 1885s, 1880, 1879 dimes as relative "sleepers" because of mintage and survival ratio/grade...which may need further exploring. The part of the fun in the purchase is the "hunt"! A great way to learn along the way...

if I had up to 50K I would invest it like suggested in an index fund. if I had 50k to blow on a coin I would choose a US coin only because I think it would be an easier sale down the road. I agree with a CAC beaned coin.
i would do a lot of work investigating 10 year values of a couple select series. I would not buy anything modern as they are too risky and do not have a long enough track record.
it could also come down to personal taste as to the series. I love old copper and old gold. I would look at a couple of the larger auction sites like stacks or heritage. I think heritage gets more high end stuff. a 1793 flowing hair chain amer. comes to mind. a certified mid VF coin can be found in the $40-50k range but any of the chains would be on my list
any coin regardless of which one is always a crap shoot when looking at a long term timeline. you have no idea what the market will look like in 10 yrs

OK, I'll bite. It would be something like this: https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot...lot&sid=6131It would fill two gaps in my collection: 1. I don't have any Kingdom of Poland gold 2. I don't have any coin from this ruler in my Poland OFER because he only struck thalers, half thalers and gold, none of which sells below 4 figures. On top of that, it woukd be my first city view coin.

I would go for safety in these upside down economic times, ASE's and other sovereign 1 ounce silver coins.
