I think you've eye-appealed it into a details/cleaned grade.

I prefer this coin after VerdiCare treatment, whatever a 'details cleaned' comment may do to the value.

I prefer the original as well fwiw.
If only verdicare was used, the use of the q-tip was maybe too aggressive. The 'natural toning' is not intact as you said, some patina is clearly stripped away on the high points and in the field.

I agree with Frog, it now has a cleaned appearance.

Lively discussion! The pre-treatment coin has obvious light surface corrosion (euphemistically called environmental damage). No way it would have straight-graded. Like most posters, I think it looks better after treatment. Surfaces will also likely be protected from ongoing corrosion. Still a problem coin, but better eye appeal IMO.

I like it better after treatment, nice job. Very nice looking coin to add to your collection.

After treatment is more visually appealing to me - details or not. I know you intend to keep but, at some point it will be sold. By your grandkids or down the line. And with that said, market acceptance is the real question and I propose the post VC coin will get more 'clicks' that the pre VC coin.
Better eye appeal with the addition of preventative maintenance - well done.

I would love to know as well . I will gladly bet the $14 spent to get ANACS to slab it as straight grade , wouldn't fly . The original crusty appearance WOULD straight grade based on current standards . In my professional opinion Verdicare details the piece .

Can someone post a link to the differences (excluding the dates of course ) between 1857 and 1856 obverses for those of us with limited knowledge? (Thanks in advance.) Very good and lively discussion with great perspectives. I'm with those that like the "new" look but agree with those that say it would have gotten a straight grade pre-VC and will get a "Details" grade post-VC. The "cameo" appearance that makes the details stand out is also what points to it not being original. The darker "shadows" around the letters and devices point to the original surface.

OK...I will do my best to show the differences between the 1856 and 1857 Obverse. So the first is the 1857 with 1856 Obverse and the second one is the standard 1857 Obverse. The reason the 1857 has an 1856 Obverse is that some dies were left over from 1856 and so they were imprinted with the 1857 date and used. Prior to 1909 the master dies did not contain a date, so it made it easy to date any good dies with the new date. This photo displays the main difference between 1856 and 1857. The 1856 O is more squared and the F is more closed at the top. The O in the 1857 is more like an oval. The F is open at the top. I included these two pictures since the right leg of the A in America is thinner for 1856 then 1857. Another attribute that I have noticed is that the AM in America for the 1856 is not connected as opposed to the connected AM for the 1857. Finally, the1856 M has a break at the top of the left side of the M as the vertical leg goes down at an angle.....it is subtle but all of my example have this attribute. The pictures are from Rick Snow's book.
