Please post a straight-on, close in pic (or two) of the rim. Often, dyer coins show rather strong rim issues, especially when viewed end-on (not vertical). Thanks.

That's a weak strike, not a Dryer Coin. Bifacial and symmetrical weakness, lack of rim design, original proto rim still retained. A well worn weak strike, no doubt, but not a Dryer Coin or a grease strike. It's possible the weight of the coin has a relationship to the weak strike, such as being caused by a thin planchet.

I like that theory. Would a proto rimmed blank fit in the collar/chamber? John1

Quote: an under-sized planchet (4.68g) Tolerance at .19 grams (+,-) so highly underweight. Any chance of getting a picture of the edge compare to a normal weight nickel?

I agree with HGK here - Nice weak strike nickel! Quote: Would a proto rimmed blank fit in the collar/chamber? Yes it would - a just like a normal planchet would fit into the collar.

Quote: Would a proto rimmed blank fit in the collar/chamber? Aren't all blanks that are fed into the coining machines proto rimmed from the upsetting mill?

Here are the dimensions of this one and a 2021P Nickel. Weight: 4.68g --> 4.99g Diameter: 21.14mm --> 21.2 mm Thickness: 1.61mm --. 1.87mm Also including a edge shot with the 2021 and a closer look at the rim.

My memory is not so good anymore. I thought a blank is a bit larger than a planchet. Once a blank goes through the upsetting mill it comes out smaller, right? John1

IMHO, there does appear to be some rim in the latest images, but diminished. This one does have some resemblance to an acid dipped coin.
