Alrighty, I gather most will be surprised. I certainly was.

I see zero, zilch, nada evidence of a cleaning. I certainly welcome any info on indicators I might be missing. I almost feel like PCGS did not want another high grade example. I think it is a 66 all day long.

I see the luster break in the fields near the stars. It's hard to see when this is shot straight on versus at an angle. Regardless it's a very nice coin.

That is what I'm thinking, especially when the consensus falls around 64-65. Still would like opinions on what I might be missing wrt cleaning. Even if you didn't think it at first, 'oh ya' pointers would be great to know.

It doesn't look close to a 66 to me. I understand you cannot capture the luster. Still, in these images I don't see near enough mint luster to go over Choice MS.

I do see subdued "matte" looking surfaces at several locations. Look at this 66 example. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin.../images/7188

I can see some lines on the cheek where it looks like it was wiped. They're very faint but apparently not faint enough.

Good call by all stating luster is an issue. Cracked and under scope, all the luster is impaired except close to devices. I've never dipped so have no idea what to look for but, given the lack of any micro scratches, I'll assume this is an over-dipped (dipped out) coin. So even though dipping is acceptable any coin taken to far is tagged cleaned by PCGS.

The impaired luster except close to devices is not from dipping. Dipping is not selective as it removes metal from the entire coin. If someone took something like eZest on a Q-tip, and cleaned the coin, then, it could get the impaired luster except close to the devices, and most likely it would leave wiping hair lines. My guess is there are some hair lines from the cleaning.

Apologies - don't want to beat this to death but I'm really interested in learning what may have been done to this Morgan.

I see no micros whatsoever, I have to assume it is over dipped. While I understand what you are saying Slider, your statement assumes the coin was clean to begin with. If there was any buildup around the devices I could see luster remaining underneath it when dipped.

Here are some new pics with different lighting.

Typical uncirculated coins do not have a difference in luster between the area close to the devices and the field area. This difference happens from circulation and cleaning. Cleaning hair lines often can not be seen from still photos or viewing the example through magnification. To view hair lines hold the coin between your thumb and index finger and put it under light and tilt the coin back and forth. Look at the fields as the fields are the easiest to spot hair lines. If the example has been wiped or cleaned the hair lines will change directions while tilting the coin.

If your example does not display hair lines, I am not sure why the example was given Details Cleaned. The TPG's do not typically give an UNC dipped coin a details grade that still is displaying luster, but they will lower the grade.
