Definitely exposure to a corrosive environment rather than an error. I'd be interested in knowing the weight as it has lost a large percentage of its mass. Thx for posting!

I have a Dime just like that, taken it to several experts who say the same thing, it has been dipped in acid. I still have it and probably always will only because I do not want someone to think it is an error and spend money to see if it is authentic.

I assume it's also considerably smaller than a normal nickel. Acid attacks all sides evenly - including the edge, making the coin smaller in diameter. Quote:

Greasy, I think that Sherrow01 has gotten more than 4 cents of enjoyment from this pickel (penny nickel).
