Spalling is a term used by advanced collectors to describe a type of die pitting, usually seen on colonial-era Imitation coppers
Yes, that is a solid triangle "eye tooth" shaped piece of metal there

That's a nice looking lady! smat45 has already given you the link that narrows it down to the correct reverse. Check the areas I have circled to narrow it down more as to which VAM it is. I cannot tell much from your full coin pics but maybe concentrate on the acid treated dies, here is a link that helps narrow those down too. Marve65: I didn't intend for that to be taken personally; "Advanced" being more like people who collect Imitation British 1/2d by variety, to differentiate between that and a rusted die...

The last picture shows the hues of toning better but I still can't grasp DMPL. NGC doesn't describe it either on the label.

MisterT: I can't help what NGC does or doesn't do; the toning is so thick that a scanning light can't penetrate it. I was thinking about breaking it out to remove the toning, but the reverse is spectacular in blue and rose tints, and in hand the prooflike surface is evident. It won't upgrade, though

@Oldgrouchyguy, I am not arguing with you or putting your coin down. It is a better date and a respectable grade. The first set of pictures probably don't do justice to the hues of toning. The last picture shows the toning better. I'm merely pointing out that the terms semi-prooflike, prooflike, and DMPL have different criteria depending on the distance of reflectiveness of the fields. With the heavy toning you can't be certain if it meets any of that criteria. I would not attempt to crack it out to remove the toning if it were mine. If you are pleased with the coin then that is all that matters. Happy collecting my friend!

MisterT: Oh I understand that; the coin was interesting to me because of the metal under the chin and the incompleteness between the rim and wingtip... and yeah, I've never seen the word 'Spalling' used, for describing coins, outside of the Imit. GB 1/2D FB group Here's one I just purchased which you may like (photos):

That is a nicer coin and nice cameo effect. I looked up this date in the PCGS registry and couldn't find a VAM 5 O over O. It does list a VAM 5 O over S however. Could that be a mistake on the ANACS label? |

I do not think a mistake but possibly a later thought about the O over O over S. This is an older slab too and more study has probably been done since. Read the full description on VAMWorld.
