So you all don't think the obverse was minted in Philadelphia, then the coins were shipped out to Denver to complete the process....

It's from the secret new St. Louis mint, halfway between Philadelphia and Denver.

It's also a bit odd that the coin bears the initials of two artists and two sculptor-engravers.

There are 4 sets of initials on the quarter. RS and EC on
the obverse and the initials D and PH on the reverse.

That sort of inefficiency is almost expected today.

Come to find out...Cyrus E. Dallin is dead, he died in 1944. But apparently he designed the Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar and I guess they used the likeness of the ship he designed for the half dollar on this quarter, which is why his initials are on it...

There IS a groan-worthy joke running around about the coin's design. At the risk of getting pummeled, here it is:

The reverse is a smaller version of the Mayflower on the Pilgrim Half. We know it's a smaller version, because is says "Mayflower Compact" and that is below the ship's design, so it's obviously the subcompact version. The full sedan size Mayflower is on the half.

I'll tiptoe out quietly now . . .

I suppose that rules out a 'crossover' model...

Oh! And on that coin, his initial D (and not initials CED) appears on the observe below Bradford's Elbow.
