I posted a question to another forum and was directed to likewise post a topic here. I'm sorry ahead of time I don't have a camera capable of taking detailed pictures of the dime that I'm asking about so I'm afraid i'll just have to make do with a description. I have a Roosevelt dime, D mint mark on the obverse side of the coin. The reel of the coin is taller than the rest suggesting that it was deep struck. The reel also does not have the ridges found on most coins. The reel itself goes around the coin touching roosevelts head, cutting off 3/4 of the last digit in the date as well as most of the word "IN" only the top 3rd of the N is visible. The top part of the E in the word " WE" is just barely visible, and TRUST looks almost like it was squeezed into the coin. The word LIBERTY is visible and legible, but it looks like its nearly cut in half horizontaly. This dime can fit into the circumfrance of another dime and leave the underlying dime's reel perfectly exposed. I'm curios if anyone knows of any other dimes with this particular error. Edit: question answered. we have a dryer damaged dime, thanks everyone for the help. Edited by Bank of Brummett 06/21/2009 11:50 am

I'm not sure what you mean by the term reel but my guess is you are talking about the rim. We need a pic of course but my guess is with a high rim and a smaller diameter this is post mint damage such as a Dryer Coin where the coin gets caught in the back of a commercial dryer between the spinning drum and the housing causing the edge to be squeezed down or some other similar damage. But this is only a guess. Do you or someone you know have a camera or a scanner?

no, I'm in a place where most people do good to have a simple 35mm kodak. as for a scanner I used to have one, but its long since broken and in the scrap pile. I'm going monday to a local coin shop, maybe the owner can give me some idea. sorry that I can't put a picture up. my description is the best I can do right now

that a picture is the only way to tell what you've got. Probably a Dryer Coin, but who knows.

I wonder how long it takes for a coin to tumble in a dryer to look like those examples? I've had the joy of taking my clothes to the laundromat and using heavy duty dryers weekly for 2 years. Since I had time to kill while my clothes were in the wash (and the place was empty since I usually went around midnite) I scrounged around in the machines and found lots of change (and a Buck knife). None of which ever looked like those examples!

The above examples are not just run through the Dryer Coins. They are stuck inside the coin tumbling till the dryer is serviced. So they've tumble a long time inside one of the inside fins, rattling around for a long time.
