Wow, awesome set; congrats! I bet that took considerable effort and a whole pile of cash. Do you have sets of the half-dollar commemorates as well? Good luck on your other sets.

I am currently working on One dollar currency set, so hard to stay focused in this hobby. I need about 10 more to complete the 49 bills I decided would make my set. |

You have built a very nice set. I have always likes the Unc. coins more than the proofs.
Great set one you should be proud of.

I'm working on a set of these as well. I've been buying more randomly though. I've got proofs and uncs in my collection. How far back of RedBook do you pay for the coins? I've got one good LCS that seems to get a fair amount of commems in and they run the price range of between $25-$80. They've got the 96' track and black revolutionaries for the high end right now. I've been hesitant to spend that much on a commem to this point. Beautiful collection. Any plans to do a proof set or the few gold commems to make a set? |

When I was buying coins for this set, I started out hoping to get them for half of RedBook. At one point I switched to less then greysheet. Many of the common coins in this set can be bought at or near melt price. When I am buying coins for a set like this, I make a list of the coins I want with the price I would like to pay. Then I check out all my local coin shops, my online sites and ebay. When I find the coins I want at the price I like .. I buy them, right then. If the coin is at a good price and you wait .. it might be gone when you come back to purchase. But stick to your price you set on your list .. or less |

Thanks for the info. I'm still learning on the collecting side of things. Started out a bullion stacker and spot is king in that market.
Picked up the Botanic Gardens-$35, Marines-$36 and the Black Revolutionary War-$76 today.

You have fulfilled quite a beautiful set of coins. I have all the proof and uncirculated clad and silver halves and dollars since 1982 with one exception--the 1996D Olympic Rowing uncirculated dollar.

I do have the Washington halves .. several of the other commemorative half dollars and some of the proof dollars .. at this time I have no plans to get all the proofs .. I am thinking of starting the upgrade process to my type set. |

I also have the proof gold coins from 1984W $10 Olympic eagle, 1986 $5 Liberty, 1987 Constitution, 1988 Nike Olympic and 1989 Congress. Once I obtain that last 1996D Olympic Rowing silver dollar, I may start on the golds, if the prices are right. Nonetheless, it will take A LOT longer to acquire all those golds, maybe for the rest of my life!

Seeing Muddler updating his modern proof dollar collection, made me think about mine.
I have not been buying the current releases,because most of them drop in price after a year or two.
I am second guessing that decision.
What are some of the other CCF members opinions.
If you have a complete set, would you continue to purchase the new releases from the mint each year?
Or wait and see if there will be a price drop in after market?

I have just made a habit of getting the commemoratives each year as I do the ASE's and silver proof sets. Some years I have gotten the BU and proof comemoratives but I was not consistent. |
