I'm talking about what you are actively seeking right now. Currently I am looking for Gratian, Valens, and Theodosius I upgrades. My current "best" examples aren't exactly in the greatest of shape and now that I have been collecting ancients for over a year I feel that I should already have nice examples of these emperors. My collection goal so far is to get as many Roman Imperial emperors as I can with a low budget. I have 43, soon to have 45 if those coins come in. Once I get to a certain point, I'm guessing a bit over 50 emperors, I'm going to start upgrading a couple. When I get a chance, I purchase other ancients besides Roman Imperial. I have yet to own a ancient Greek coin. That's next on my list.
When I go to upgrade some late Romans, I'm thinking about trying to find decent AE2 coins.
I've been collecting ancient coins since November of last year. I'm still a beginner, and developing plans as I go along.

I really have no set goals. I've been working on completing an example from every emperor for the past 10 years or so. There are some that I will never be able to afford, so I guess I will complete as many as possible. Money is so tight now a days, so my short term goal is to be able to buy a coin or two a month.

Im only just starting out (as is clear by my newbiness) but If I can find a good place to buy, ill be looking for coins with interesting reverses. I am looking for any Christian imagery and I would love to have a coin depicting Roma seated (reminds me of Britannica!) but you know, any thing is a good thing.

I'm missing approximately 17 of the accepted Emperors and Usurpers. At the moment, I think I am trying to put together a sub-collection of the ladies of Rome. I recently picked up a poor condition Crispina and a decent Oticilla. Just don't ask me why. I have no idea how I started this sub-set collection. It just happened.

ValiantKnight, I'm not sure what I'm collecting, I want one of everything, started out with over 200 Roman coins in one buy, there are 5 Greek coins I want. like to build the 12 Caesars. One thing I need to do is figure out something and stick to it. ...

My goal is to buy coins I like so much that I will never be tempted to sell them. You should only buy coins that you know something about before you buy. You will find that you get fewer fakes and fewer overpriced coins that way. You would be better off if you can go to a coin show or shop where you can handle real coins. People who have touched 10,000 coins start to develop a feeling for what they should look and feel like, how much they should cost and whether you will see a dozen more this year or wait a dozen years before you see one again. Enjoy. If you don't enjoy, why bother?

Hello all, I have been collecting for about a year now and am still unsettled. I am mostly into Roman LRB's with the occassional denarius, Greek or misc coin thrown in. For now I am just slowly working towards getting 1-4 of each Roman emporer, not the usurpers or wives though. For now mostly LRB's due to the nice cost/quality ratio. I have been snapping up any cheap coin that comes along, but lately I am moving towards quality over quantity, saving certain rulers for when I can afford better specimens. Plus I am really into portraits lately; some of those great and storied men look like Disney villains while others look like just random dudes that I might bump into at the store. The really well done portraits just make history come alive for me.

Thanks! I've been malingering over at another site dedicated to the subject. Not sure I am allowed to mention the competition, but I see some familiar names from the posts here. I didn't even know there were other sites :) Lucky for me I got bored at work and found this one...so now there are at least two sites relevant to my hobby. This site seems a little more relaxed, I like that. I will have to look into putting a gallery together after I scan and file my most recent batch of auction goodies.

Perhaps you will agree with my observation that each of the several discussion groups has its own flavor. This one has more people interested in late Roman and next to no one interested in owning the finest known example of a coin. A higher percentage of CCF posts are chatty just showing a new coin but we have some that ask questions along with showing the new toy. I try to guess where to post a new coin or a question according to who I think might be more likely to reply.

I don't think there is a problem with mentioning another site for our hobby. I, too, go back and forth from here to Forum Ancient Coins depending on what I'm after. You are also correct that this site is more relaxed and I think easier to discuss things without feeling like you are asking dumb questions. But Forum has it's good points as well. If I need an expert to help with attribution and I can't find it here, I go to Forum (Doug is an expert here and when he is around will offer his advice and opinions and there are others as well). One other advantage to CCF is here you can ask advice and opinions before you purchase or bid on a coin. On Forum that is frowned upon because Joe, the owner, is in the business of selling coins and does not want to placed in a position to compete against himself.
Anyway, they are both fine discussion boards, and we look forward to reading your input and seeing your coins.
Regards,
