I have a Bounty Hunter Lone Star MD I got with my Priority Club points. I have used it for about 3 weeks now and I'm having some problems (not sure if it's me or the detector). I have read the instruction book several times and when I pass over an object that gives me a good tone, I dig it up and find that it is nothing but garbage. I have adjusted the discrimination and sensitivity, but I'm still picking up all the trash. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I need to do besides get a better MD?

You may be in a high trash area. Don't give up, sounds like your doing all the right things.

Be careful how you sift your "trash". If you are in a high-trash area, you may need to scan first in your "all" setting and then in the discrimination setting to narrow down the metal composition of your hits. My Garret will pick up signals bouncing off mere specs of rust and fool me into thinking that I've found something of value, and separating rust specks from dirt is tedious, to say the least.

The only trash that most people don't dig is the very bottom iron signals. Anything above that could be good! And if your in a relic area, a musket ball for example would sound like trash but be a good find.

What you have to keep in mind is the detector is guessing. Aluminum is the metal detectors worst enemy. Any shred of aluminum will look like coins or rings to your detector. There's no effective way to hunt without getting trash. You might need to change areas!

Great info here. I have similar problems, and feelings, but I'm forcing myself to be patient, and to not get discouraged.

Like Broseph commented, many will dig anything above iron, even if they are jumpy signals. Also, when something is heavily corroded it may give a signal much different than if it were not corroded.
