Im new to detecting. For now I'm using my aunts ancient Bounty Hunter? Detector but am looking to purchase one for myself. Im not looking to spend a bunch of money anywhere between $125-$175.
I was looking at the Garrett ACE 150. Its $150 and to me looks perfect for me. A good brand and not too expensive. Opinions on this model?

colu,
I am glad you brought up this subject since I personally would like to find the most effective/efficient and economical metal detector that is capable of doing the following:
a) indicating what type and approximate size of metallic object has been located,
b) determining the depth of the located object below the surface.
c) capable of searching in either shallow water or on dry land.
I know that the prices of metal detectors range all over the board but I would like to purchase a brand/model that has a very good track record backed up by an excellent customer service department in the event technical issues should occur with the equipment...
Thanks

I've owned several detectors over 35 years. From what I've read that's a great entry-level machine.

The ACE 150 is an excellent choice, capable of finding some very nice relics. mdp, this would be an excellent choice for you or the ACE 250 (little more money) I have the ACE 350, love it! Found lots of coins with it. Pretty accurate on type of coin in ground and depth. Usually, but not always, the model number indicates price of detector :-)

Will do. Any tips on general places to go? I've heard parks and playgrounds but, isn't it to a point illegal to start digging holes in parks? Lol

Here in California, which by the way, has the strictest MD laws in the country, the beaches are our safest bet. Parks? Depends on the city and local ordinances. We have received permission to detect most parks, including one that is quite historical.

I'm really happy with the ace 250. Never pay sticker price for something in the $100 range and up. It's you're not getting a chunk of, you don't talk enough!

Hello,
I am very new to detecting having done it only once in my life. The experience was very enjoyable except for the fact of having to dig for hours and finding out that the detector I was using just found pieces of lead pipes, beer can tabs, or pieces of steel cable.
I have read all of the Garrett advertising propaganda on their upper end models like the 2500 etc.(or similar make/model) but still feel a bit confused on exactly how a model 2500 will benefit a user more compared to a model 300, for example.
It would be very helpful if someone could explain the verifiable advantages from their own experiences of exactly why one would want to shell out the extra $ for a 2500 model instead of the less expensive model 300.
I am convinced that Garrett is an excellent brand but am still open to other make/models if a better overall value can be obtained.
I will be primarily looking for coins, medals, arrowheads, and jewelry in tobacco fields, grassy areas adjacent to very old homes(1800s), and 5" deep water within creek beds.
Thanks for the assistance., mdpmedia

It's the ability to seperate trash from treasure. I hunt trashy sites and cheap detectors just won't get it. The brand that I use is not high-end but not cheap. It has the ability to "see" silver masked by iron, for example. Target ID at greater depths is another example.

Quote: Target ID at greater depths Can you clarify in greater detail exactly what you mean by this above statement and what the specific feature on a detector implementing this action is usually called? Also what make/model do you now use and in what type of environment are you detecting? 'Trashy' is a pretty general catch-all category. Thanks much, mdpmedia
