I found this one around 1989. I could take you to the exact spot I dug it but the land is now covered with houses. I believe the marks are counter-stamps. The reverse is just about gone but on the obverse you can make out the date and part of Liberty. This one is a mess. Any ideas on the chop mark?
Given the size of the letters which appear to be set in relief, along with the crude workmanship, I'm inclined to suspect that this was the issue of an early toolmaker and/or blacksmith. It appears that one mark is atop another. If so, this was perhaps more of a simple test piece as opposed to it being done as a means of circulating advertising. Pieces like this one evoke far more questions than answers ... still, fun!
