Hi all, I've shown the progress of my registry type set in another thread ( https://goccf.com/t/103698&whichpage=1). I have an opportunity to purchase this coin to add to the set: The coin is graded MS66FBL, and my cost would be about 20% more than the PCGS price guide value. Do you think this coin is worth it considering the nice toning? Also, since my last update I added a 1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickel in MS65 and a 1902 Indian cent in MS64RB, but I haven't had a chance to get them TrueViewed yet, so I will post those when I have the pictures done. To me, the extra cost of a toned coin is not worth it. Others I am sure will disagree.

yes, and if you don't get it, plenty of other people will buy it.
I've seen $100 morgans with spectacular toning sell for 2k......so depending on the buyer. But yes thats a beautiful franky

I know the auctions you are talking about. If I may interject, buy coins that appeal to you that make sense to you and the amount of money you are willing to spend. If I was collecting attractively toned Franklins I would find this seller's auctions within reason.
There's an expression worth repeating: There is no Santa Claus in numismatics. Excellent coins do not sell in public below their value. My opinion on this coin is that it is lovely- but toners from this era are not that uncommon. if you do decide to buy it make sure you can return it if you don't like it in hand. toners cover up problems- and you have to really look closely to sell if its a strong 66 or not.
i hope this helped.

It is a beauty! And I am not qualified to determine whether or not you paid too much. IMHO it is your determination as to whether or not you paid too much.

by the way, do not always go by greysheet or coinfacts at times, there are coins that look so eye appealing you have to throw those guides out and just pay big money. Like cc9999 said, excellent coins do not sel in public below their value

I just reviewed your other thread and I think this one will go very nicely with your other coins. Can't wait to see what your next purchase brings!

Something as special as that, forget the guides. If you like it, are comfortable with the price and can readily afford it, get it. Personally, I'm not that big about Ms 65 vs 66 grades, but I do love the tone on that coin, and it would be stunning to see a registry set of similar pieces I have to say. You certainly have great taste. :-)

Definitely FBL, I can go with the 66 and that toning is BEAUTIFUL. I am with the others on throwing the price guides out the window on this one. It really is up to you what you think it to be worth. It goes perfectly with your Morgan and Half Dime. An MS66FBL lists at 200 on Coin World. Don't know what PCGS values it at, but I would go to 250 or so if I had the extra money for something like that.

Would love to have that in my collection. I'll also agree with what others have posted. When a coin has eye appeal like that prices guides are insignificant.

In my opinion, the eye appeal is nothing short of spectacular! I would expect to see a hefty premium on a coin that oozes eye appeal like this one. If you LOVE it...and have the financial means...and you're comfortable with the price, I say go for it!

If I was financially able, I would buy that coin. Just my style.
Buy it if YOU like it, but I say it's worth the price.
