I had a for a giveaway where we would take 5 or more of peoples' addresses and mail any type of note or coin, whether US or other, making sure it isn't worth more than face value, in an envelope. Then those who receive the envelope remove one name and add theirs to the bottom. Eventually everyone would be receiving notes and coins by mail. But alas, the US Postal Service claims this as being illegal, an example of those pyramid schemes where economists have estimated that about 95% of pyramid participants lose their money. It would have been interesting if we could have done this. But I don't know how we would be losing money if we are just sending money worth the same value. Basically I would think of it as more a trade than anything. But I guess since it is illegal we shouldn't mess with loopholes. I think it would have been interesting to see different notes and coins being traded among us members. If we could have done something like this, I would set the limit of any note or coin to be dated before 1990.

Que?
I am slightly confused as to what you are proposing. We kinda do that anyways here with the buying and trade sections. Just wait till ya get 50 posts and ya can trade or sell whatever numismatic item ya want.

This is too much like a chain letter which I also don't think would be a good idea. Sorry.
The post office views this as a pyramid scheme which is illegal. It's too much like the letters that say, mail $1 to 10 different people and put your name on a list...
Let's keep the trades and giveaways on the forum. I think it's safer that way.

Yeah it is kind of like the trading, I just thought it would be interesting to do like a mystery trade or something like that. Each address on the list you mail out some sort of currency. If you don't like what you receive mail it to someone else, but I guess it would just be too confusing, so disregard my post, sorry for wasting the time of those who clicked on my subject.

PSP, if you check back through the older posts, you'll see that last year there was a 'Secret Santa' which was very much a mystery trade. No-one had any idea what they were getting. It may happen again this year, but it takes a lot of time & effort to get it all organised & then follow up to see that all participants get their 'gift'. Do a search on 'Secret Santa' & you'll enjoy reading all the comments etc. I was too late in joining to take part last year, but will certainly be in it this year.

That's a great idea. Does that mean Mom and Dad give us all presents for Christmas?

Grace, If you read the thread, you'll see that Mom & Dad weren't involved in any way. It's the members who 'swap' pressies.

Some elongated coin collectors do something called PIF, which means Pay It Forward, where they anonymously send out elongated coins to known collectors -- probably people in some sort of network or circle. But it is based on gifting and not receiving.

I have been receiving and sending PIF packages (meaning I am in the loop Edix has mentioned) and it's simply fun to receive an anonymously sent letter and it is as much joy to pack up a coin and mail it away to someone (there is no amount limit or time pressure involved) - not everything has always to pay off. Why not have a little bit of fun sometimes?

We've started a Pay it Forward program here, at CCF. :) I think at the moment we've actually got two separate threads running, thanks to the generosity of arthrene.
This Secret Santa sounds truly interesting, though! And it's never too early to start your christmas shopping. :D

ElleKitty,
I actually have not yet participated in the pay it forward exchanges. I'm too slow to be the first poster but I'm still trying.

Ack! You're correct. Still generous though, with your Birthday Giveaway. It was thingee that split the Pay it Forward between myself and garycsr. Oooh, I am so bad with names. ><
