I believe a black stripe like that is often attributed to a rubber band.

Thanks for the price info, guys. I'll see what my LCS says about some of those pieces when they are in front of him. I suppose it is possible I could get more selling them individually, but that would take a lot of time and I think Ann is OK with selling them to the LCS and letting him take care of that. I do look forward to that magic 250 post mark. If I was going to sell to anyone over the internet, it'd be the folks here.

Rubber bands make sense as explanation for that striped Morgan. Thank you to those you proposed that possibility. I think I have even seen some old rolls here and there that may have had rubber bands around the end.

@nalaberong, I'll definitely buy that low ball Peace dollar from her. I had never though much of those types of coins until I joined up here. But after seeing how many people here really enjoy what they represent, I have taken a liking to them as well! Incidentally, she doesn't want to give me any of the coins DIRECTLY (because she wants to split the profits evenly with her brother), but she wrote me a generous check last night. I smiled and said, "You know I'm just going to turn around and spend it on some of your coins!" She got a kick out of that.

I also found out a little about her father: W.D.D. is William Dean Douglass, born 1902 in Nebraska. He was accepted to West Point Military Academy but was unable to keep up with the academic requirements because the the math education at his high school (according to Ann) wasn't quite up to snuff. As a result he ended up taking charge of an ROTC unit back here where he met his wife, Gertrude, who was a sponsor of their unit. They were soon engaged, but she got cold feet and ran off to Chicago. Well, Ann said, "he was having none of that!" He caught the next train to Chicago and did not return until she had married him. I'll look forward to documenting a few more details about the man as I learn them from Ann. I love little snapshots of history like this, definitely makes me see some of these coins in a different light.

Still working on the dimes. I have gone through about six rolls worth (mostly Roosevelts, but also a large handful of Mercurys), and there are still two albums to go through. I'll keep you informed.

Thanks for the background of W.D.D., he sounds like he was a pretty interesting guy. Yeah it would take awhile selling on ebay and I understand wanting a quick sale. Neat story.

Still working my way through albums and rolls, but I thought I'd go ahead and post this to keep this thread alive. Recall from the first post that this coin was found in a plain white envelope with a few other quite unremarkable coins: what a surprise it was!

Sorry I haven't posted in a bit, but I just finished going through the last of the quarters last night since we had planned on selling today. It seems like silver has leveled off at just a little bit above $23.

There were around 75 64-D Washingtons, but unfortunately there were no DDOs or Type-C reverses. There were at least as many 64-D dimes and I did find two DDRs in that batch. The doubling on the dimes does not seem as strong as in some photos I have seen, but it was quite distinct especially in "STATES OF AMERICA". Is there more than one type of DDR for this year? Pricing was a little difficult to find for these, I'm guessing they may not be that rare since I found two of them. They'd probably grade somewhere in the high AU or low MS, but with toning/tarnish their eye appeal is not as nice as it could be.

I also came across a 1951 Washington that could be a DDO as well as a couple more die breaks and a few other oddities that I will share here in the coming days: I'm not going to sell any of the DDs or other unusual items until I get a few more opinions.

Stay tuned...

Great story and awesome collection! Hope you find something unique in there dude. You should get a nice chunk of that for helping her organize it and sell it. Good luck and happy hunting!

UPDATE: we sold the collection earlier this week when it seemed that silver had leveled off just above $23 (although it looks like it may go a little higher yet.. grrr...), but I will still continue with updates. Ann let me keep several pieces that I liked along with the old Buffalo nickel Album and still insisted on paying a hefty sum for helping her. I still think she gave me too much but she gets upset when I try to tell her she is paying me too much when I help her around the house!

THE DIME REPORT
Here's an overview of the dime collection:

WINGED LIBERTY
Range: 1918-1945
Total Coins: 68
Unique Coins: 27
Rarest Date: 1934-D
Best Grade: AU-50

ROOSEVELT
Range: 1946-1964
Total Coins: 310
Unique Coins: 42
Rarest Date: 1949-S
Best Grade: MS-60+ (several of the 64-Ds and a few earlier dates would easily grade at least MS-60)

I found two 1964-Ds that appeared to be DDRs, but only "STATES OF AMERICA" showed doubling, not "ONE DIME". The LCS said this was probably Machine Doubling (am I remembering the correct term?) but he did point out that one of them had an overpunched mint mark. He said they had no significant premium so I kept them along with all of the beautiful 1964-Ds and others that appeared to be BU since the LCS was offering no premium on those.

Oh, and Ann decided to keep the half eagle which made me happy. I bought her a hard case for it. That is why I wanted her to come to the shop with me so she'd have a chance to see everything before we sold it and have an opportunity to keep something back.
