Ok, it was too cold today to do yard work and the Patriots don't play until tonight so I spent 5 hours sorting my Buffalo "extras" that had been in rolls & a plastic bag since I inherited them back in the early 80's.

Background, these were hoarded from circulation in the 60's-70's in Rhode Island so there will be some location bias in regards to the lack of mintmarks.

Here are the raw numbers:

dated 159 32.9%
dateless 324 67.1%
total 483

type 1 2 0.4%
type II 481 99.6%
total 483

Only 2 type ones and they were both dateless.

Dateless
Type II- no mint 293
Type II- D 19
Type II- S 10

Dates
Type II no mint 141
Type II D 8
Type II S 10

The only semi key, if you could call it that, was a lone 1920-D

A 1938-D with a die crack

Amoung the Dateless "D" mint coins there was one that caught my eye. Could this be a 1936_D 3 1/2 leg?

next post a date analysis...

Picture of the dated ones. Teens in front row, then 20's & 30's. The die break 38-D is in the 2x2.

Only 15 or so out of the 159 were full horn VF or better with 2 AU 37's being the best condition specimens

Buffalo-Nickles,-A-Hoard-Case-Study...

Dateless Buffalos...No mintmark in rolls & stacks in back, type II, D & S mints in front. Possible 36-D 3 1/2 leg in 2x2.

In regards to the 3 1/2 legger..... Since the coin is undated, and the mint mark looks small, I'd bet it is most likely the 17--D version. (There is a 27-D version, too).

The % of dateless is actually higher as I've given out at least 4 rolls to family members as curiosities. Would a picture of the obverse of the odd legged "D" help with ID? it's pretty well worn so I'm not sure if it would show any diagnostic that people would need...

Did you do the ribbon diagnostic to date any of the dateless?

Not my pic but was found on the forum and has helped me out a few times.

That's a really nice collection of Buffs you got there Paddy. Dated or dateless Buffs are beautiful coins.

I agree with westernsky that your 3.5 legger is almost certainly going to be a 17-d. I have two on hand and they look pretty much like yours.

Hoard Update:

After shoveling out from the latest New England snowstorm I spent some time with what I thought was the searched Type II dateless no mint pile. When I did the initial run through I neglected to look for 2 feathers or indicators of doubling and some candidates for a date restoring project with my 3rd grader as a school science project.

Well, it turned out I missed a lot: Of the 293 no mintmark Type II Buffalo's, I missed 6 type I's, and a clear S mint. The makes 8 Type I's all no mintmarks and 11 type II S mints.

Here is the 2 feather...

Buffalo-Nickles,-A-Hoard-Case-Study...

I also looked for some evidence of feather doubling and only found one but it's hard to see in my limited cell phone photography but there is clearly something under the large feather on it's left side
