Hello,
List your favorite, reliable, fair, honest ... ebay sellers, online dealers. So many out there. Who's the best & who to stay away from?
Myself, Ive used several online dealers and never had a problem. Jakesmp, brooklyngallery, jandm.com(canadian), mintproducts, goldeneaglecoin.

Bye 4 now

We just talking about online sellers or does the question apply to any seller? I tend to buy coins from my trusted dealer at the flea market as opposed to on ebay.

Being a collector of platinum eagles, I buy from the mint. I also buy from trusted online dealers. The dealers I do business with were recommended by other CC members. ebay is also a great way to buy and sell, but you have to be careful when buying. Knowledge is the best defence against fraud.

A new coin shop opened near my house, so I might have to add that to my list.

I mainly stick to ebay. When I lived in Omaha I worked at a mall that had a coin shop across the hall from my store. Soooo much fun to just go look through a 1$ box of foreigns on my lunch breaks.

However I just moved and there isn't anything close to me at all now.

Only on-line coin dealer I've bought from is forum mom and dad Susan and Bobby.

I do buy from the mint.

Most of my coins come from my trusted "local" (40 miles away) dealer.

Take my advice ,

Whatever you do shop around and dont buy first thing you see. Some dealers like by my house charge double on stuff they sell. Example his high prices his charges. 1973 d ike torn out of mint set. 49.95 . I could buy his mint set for 19.95 cheaper than is ike in flip. His mint set had two ikes plus other coins. 69.95 for 38 thru 61 jefferson set. You can buy same thing on ebay for 25 to 35 all day long on there. His proof sets and mints were double the price it seemed. He wanted 175 dollers for 100 Indian pennys in rolls. 900 for an bu roll of 1950 d nickels. I can buy an roll of bu 1950 d nickels for 485 to 550 on ebay . His overpriced pennys I can get all day for 45 to 50 bucks an roll on ebay.
Dont ask me where he gets is prices but they way to expensive. There are other dealers out there selling stuff at cheaper prices than him. So take my advice shop around . On ebay be carefull on ebay with some of the dealers overcharging on shiping bigtime. Charging 6.95 to ship an single coin. I bought 20 coins from one dealer . He charged 19.95 to ship them to me. I dont know why they do it when cost less than two bucks to ship an coin. In my auto parts sales on ebay. If did that my biders would complain and would never buy my auto parts then I cant make an living selling on ebay. Last monlth when I raised my shiping prices since us post office raised them. My buyers complained big time about it more tham once. On my shiping rates I charge like 3 bucks extra for stuff. I ship lots stuff in flat rate boxes 8.95 for heavy stuff like starters or whatever in parts. My buyers pay me 11.25 per box on those. I think its joke some of those coin dealers or companys charging those very high shiping rates. 8.95 or 6.95 per coin for first coin then an 1 extra for next coin. Its strange us auto parts guys and other dealers like me on ebay charge about the same on auto parts. My shiping prices are about the same as the other auto parts guys. If us auto parts guys did same like those coin dealers do on shiping. I would charge peaple 49.95 on starters becides 11.25 like I do. I would never sell any auto parts.

Buy in bulk from dealers they give you beter price I learned. Why buy just one coin buy more than one coin at time. Also check to see if they combine shiping also. Do like me and try to buy from hobbie guys since they are cheaper than the than the coin dealer is sometimes.

Being a collector for well over 60 years now I can say I have absolute preferences in coin buying. I would never buy from ebay. Everything I've ever seen there is overpriced, taking a chance on what you get, paying postage and just to many chances on junk.
Coin stores are OK but you have to pay for their realestate taxes, electric bills, water bills, phone bills, gas bills, family food and living expenses. That is how they make a living so the money has to come from you when you buy a coin.
My number one preference is coin shows.
Number two is flea markets
Number three is garage/yard/estate sales.
My greatest purchases have been at the garage/yard sale places where I've walked away with thousands of dollars worth of coins for a little more than face value. As I have mentioned many times you have to ask. Many people have old coins laying around but will not put them out at such sales. You have to ask.
At flea markets not many dealers but you get to know them personally and can get some really great deals.
Coin shows are the greatest for large varieties, consistant dealers, decent prices and just a lot of fun and exercize. However, there too you must help the dealer pay for his expenses at being there. The more expensive the show, the higher the prices of the coins. Examples are the large coin shows where the dealers have to travel large distances to get there, pay a lot for a table, stay at a hotel/motel, pay for food and intertainment while there. Smaller shows have local dealers and the prices of coins reflect that.

I haven't purchased any coins yet. I stopped by a local coin shop for some supplies a few days ago, but didn't get any coins. I just re-started collecting so I'm sure this will change over time, especially once I tackle more difficult coins. I think my favorites will be garage/yard/estate sales and flea markets for the fun finds/searches and local coin shops for the more difficult key dates.

I buy from a wide mixture of distribution channels and since I like modern items, I keep a spreadsheet with the price of the same item from multiple vendors to get a feel of what price is reasonable. I have recently started buying from ebay and while it has been very good so far, I find it is like a giant fleamarket (with associated quality issues).

For some items I also buy direct from the mint, so I get the coin really clean (dealer inventory is not always well cared for). And when I get a chance I have also gone to coin shops and coin shows. If there was a good coin shop nearby I would probably spend most of my budget there.

Good luck and enjoy the search!

Start with harlanjberk.com There's lots to look at there, in every price range, and most everything is photographed.

I'm always on the lookout for coins from any source. I haven't bought from ebay, but see no reason not to do so under proper circumstances. You may pay a bit more buying from a dealer, but then again, you have the opportunity to closely examine a coin prior to purchasing. Coin shows can be excellent, though lighting at some shows leaves something to be desired...and if you're like me, and like to ponder a major purchase for a day or two or three, coin shows force you to make up your mind faster than you might find comfortable.

If your community has a coin club, then their auctions/swap meets, etc. can be an excellent way of picking up nice coins at a fair price.

I buy mostly on ebay. Since I mostly like military tokens that don't show up very often, (accept maybe the most common pieces) I really can't afford to pay much attention to feedback. If someone has something I want and a decent scan I'll bid on it. If I pass on something it most likely will be because of a bogus looking scan than feedback. But then also, I'm not really going to lose much if a seller turns out to be a puke. These tokens usually average between $8-15.

I've also bought a number of pieces from cash coin connection in mail bids.

I never had much luck at coin shows accept when they had the F.U.N show down here and the Money Show before that. But the locals shows were just a recycling game.

Oh yes, favorite dealer would be Paul Cunningham who I met at the F.U.N show and bought 13 tokens from. *Very* professional and very courteous.
