Hello. Here is my new coin, 1798 Large Cent S-164, R-4. I know it is not problem free coin, but I bought it, because of quite nice details and because color looks natural to me. I did not like surface issues and huge scratches, but it is 215 year old coin, so I forgive this:) I am always asking you about price which I paid, because I do not have too much money to spend on coins. This time I paid 145$ (with shipping) for this coin. It is one of my most expensive purchases, so I hope I did not overpaid... Please grade this coin for me and tell me the truth about price which I paid:) In my opinion it is F details coin. And one more thing - I believe that weak points on the date, are natural for this Sheldon number, because I saw few other examples with the same weakness. Thank you for all anwers. Nice example. F12 Details. $145 seems about right for this one.

I would agree with your details grade of F12, maybe a little bit lower at VG10. Per CQR (Copper Quotes by Robinson) I would furthermore consider the overall condition of the surfaces to be approx. average to average-. (this has to do with the equality of the planchet and surfaces). Finally, one must consider the obverse scratches which do detract (but which fortunately are not located across the face - that would be more distraction imo). CQR assigns for an average- coin a value of $ 125 in GD5, $ 350 in VG8, and 390 in F12. Personally in would net grade at about VG7 so a value of $ 250 - 200 seems about right. I would have certainly have bought it for the price you paid, and I think you did well.

F15/12. GERMANICVS is spot on with his assessment, the only difference in my eyes is the net grade which I would set at G6 or G5 (grade=value) for medium granularity, nicks on obverse rim and field, and the scratches. All in all a very good buy and decent coin.

I should hope that you're beginning to realize, after almost a year of posting and asking intelligent questions here, that you've a pretty good eye for coins and an appropriate sense of value. Even better, you know when to ask before you leap. This purchase is just another bit of proof.

I'm also seeing F12 details. The price was fair taking into account the problems.

F12 details, scratched. Some might describe the surfaces as lightly granular, but to me it looks natural enough not to detract. EAC grade, G6? I think you paid a fair price for this coin. Congrats.
