Recently, I've bought a large bag of about 450 pre 1900 nickels (paying ~70c a coin).

I was sorting them up in the last few days (lots of fun), and just when I was about to finish, and only 2 unsorted coins were left, this coin came along.

This might just be wishful thinking, but I believe I'm seeing 1885.

What date would you say this coin is?
Is it worth buying Nic-A-Date bottle to try and reveal the last digit?

Thanks for looking .

I'm also attaching a 1895 date closeup for font comparison.

I can't tell for sure, but it looks like either a 5 or a 7 to me. Can you take a higher resolution picture of the date? I'll run it through Photoshop to see what comes out.

87 in my opinion.

I think the damage over the last digit of the date is PMD. (Probably an old scratch)

Well when I first looked at the date I immediatly thought 7, but that my opinion. And just wondering if you bought that lot from a dealer or private party?

Unfortunately, I think you got 1887 here.

I see 1885. The shape of the last numeral seems to be more strongly a 5 than a 7. The vertical bar towards the front of the numeral is one of the giveaways. The shape of the base of the flag goes down and then up, like the 5, not up and then down, like the 7. The diagonal bar that some may be interpreting as a 7 is at a far smaller angle than that of a 7. IMHO, it is an 1885.

Here's another zoomed pic of the date (the best I could do with < 100kb pic).

Would you Nic-A-Date it first?

I played around with the picture in Photoshop, and the 7 jumped out at me. The key is the rectangular top piece. Its a thick rectangle on the 7, but is slightly thinner and swept to the right on a 5.

I would to ahead and Nic-A-Date it just to be sure.

1887, but I'd invest in a Nic-a-date just to be perfectly sure.

I could see it go either way. There appears to be an indentation at the bottom of the unknown numeral and that could be the open circle at the bottom of the 5...

Nic-a-date is a bit of a scam. Just get some white vinegar, it will go just as well. However, I would have said thats a 7, even before the comparison
