Her is a Standing Liberty quarter in poor condition. After looking at it closely (thru a loupe) my heart did a little skip in beat. I circled the area where the mintmark is located on the coin series. What is your opinion on what you see? Thanks for looking. Ben Edited by Bonedigger 08/13/2007 4:09 pm

"I see dead people."
Just kidding, I think it's just an aberration of the way it wore. Maybe an expert in the series knows of some other diagnostic to tell for certain.

Think you're a little high on where the 'S' should be. Posted an image from ebay. Let's see how close it is.

But then again, where I marked it, looks like an 'S' to me!

The location is off by quite a bit. Just a funny wear issue IMHO. Mike

I agree, it looks like part of the outer pattern of the star and it is way too high...

We all agree that Bonedigger's quarter is a 1927, right? The coin posted by Vaslin is the key date 1923-S which is valuable even with most of the date missing. Given that it is a 1927, I was all ready to say it doesn't matter whether a poor-condition 1927 quarter has a mint mark since they would all be worth close to melt. Then I took out the latest Coin Market magazine and I see the '27-D is valued at $14 in Good while the S is $35. Coins that I assumed were junk silver don't look so junky at today's prices! I'll bet the '27-S was less pricy when dealer JH Cline decided to roll out this quarter to create a business card:
