The capsule contains rare coins, a Paul Revere plate, papers and other artifacts dating back to the 1600s, said Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin, who also heads the state's historical commission.Story here. I haven't seen the specific coins listed--but presumably they are early US coins--I just wonder what they could be?

Its funny how if they decided to put some more stuff in it and bury it again that in 200 years from now our stuff would be worth nothing and all there stuff would be worth lots. Although in 16 or 1700s putting a good old roll of quarters in there would be like all your money. Interesting story!

Soo exciting! 2 time capsules is such a short period of time. I can't wait to see it once it's on display. Unfortunately, I just heard on the news that they may have bathed the coins in acid before sealing them in the time capsule.

I'm curious as to which country of origin the 1600 coins are from. Could be English, or possibly Spanish minted in Mo?

I saw the image of the single coin they found unfortunately couldn't enlarge the image very much but sort of looked like a Seated Liberty? One of the coins added in 1855 if so

@ santafeboy
I tried to enlarge the image too and although it's blurry I also thought it looked like a Seated Liberty.

I wonder if they will find a 1793 Large Cent?

I got dibs on the Large Cents :-)
I personally think we should remove the contents, preserve and encapsulate them, place them back in, and continue the time capsule with something significant from now (but what?)

So in 1855 they added more coins to the kitty. Did they take an inventory then? I am surprised this will be a surprise - but can't wait to see it.

It would be hilarious to PCGS slab all the coins and reseal it. People in 2214 will be VERY confused.

Quote: I'm curious as to which country of origin the 1600 coins are from. Quite possibly North America as in a 1652 pine tree shilling. Believe it or not they were still around then. broadsides from the time that listed the values of various foreign coins in current money did list the Massachusetts NE and tree shillings, so I assume they were still sometimes encountered.

I'm sure we'll see some very cool MS coins come out of this box; the waiting is killing me.
