Hey guys, I'm interested in some opinions on grade of this coin. I'm new to all this, so I'm just curious if I'm making the right purchases! Thankfully this forum is such a great resource.

Light reflections make it difficult to grade. Looks mid AU...maybe 55

Welcome to Coin Community, tyler20c. This is a fairly common example of the type, but still worth a bit of a premium over metal value. The areas to concentrate on when determining whether wear has occurred include the back of the headdress and the shoulder and legs of the eagle. Differences in strike quality can offer a similar appearance, though, and it's difficult to be sure that the slightly-circulated look of yours is in fact wear.

These climb rapidly in value as grade goes up, so it behooves the buyer to be very cautious when grading a raw one to decide a purchase price. It could as easily be a $700 AU as a $1500 MS64 with little differences in visible marks.

Thanks for the awesome info! I payed 775 for it... seemed like a good deal to me but again I don't have a whole lot of knowledge other than what I have learned on this forum just recently.

That is probably not a terrible price but you are swimming in dangerous waters for someone new to the hobby. Raw gold coins are not for the inexperienced. One missed call could cost $1000.

Melt value is currently over $600 so you can't get hurt too badly by paying $775 for this coin. It looks attractive with no obvious problems and should grade AU-53 at least. Very nice addition to a gold type set!
