I have a pair of 2 Reales both dated 1820ZAG. One is 26m.m.weighing 6.8 grams and the other is 28m.m weighing 6.3 grams with a widely spaced date.

Pair-Of-2-Reales-1820zag-With-Differences?

Should these Independance isues vary that much or could one or boh be contemporary issues?

all seems to be okay from what I know, the dies were hand done and the coins were struck without a collar.

The Zacatecas mint was a war-time mint, and had many different dies made.
You even had portrait variations - they were not using king punches until the late end of the mint (from what I remember)
I have another one which is different from yours :)

Very few Zacatecas Kleeberg off-metal 2 Reales exist but moving forward the ISSUE with debase silvering with some War of Independence issues needs to be explored with XRF Analysis. Its already been shown that the cast issues may not have the GNL 0.2% minimum gold signature due to their cast character (i.e., dendritic microstructure).

We only scratched the surface ... of course. No pun intended <BG>.
