I sort of broke one of my rules today and bought a coin with scratches. I liked the condition (0-107?, R-3?) (obviously except the scratches) and thought it would do great in my 7070 with the EF going to a capsule for my better coins. I paid $50. Image: Bust1833obv.jpg73.75 KB Image: bust1833rev.jpg74.26 KB

Hi MLFLY,
Definitely scratched, but otherwise very attractive with a nice original color. As far as wear goes, it looks choice VF to EF. As long as the scratches don't bother you, I'd say you got a good price.
I don't know Overton numbers; are you confident this is a scarce die variety?

Jaobler,
Thanks for the response. The scratches don't bother me in the 7070. No, I'm not sure of the 0-107 or the R-3 (the reason for the "?"). I'm more used to the VF - EF scale. I'm trying to learn the other. This gives me a chance to fill the album but then upgrade my XF to something higher when time and $$$ permit.

You can see the scratches on Liberty's cheek. THere are about 4 of then that run 1/2 way across the coin on both sides. It's light except for the cheek and you can't really see it on the reverse in this scan. The are diectly opposed to each other and the spacing is precisely the same - like it ran through a lining machine. Any chance this occured during production?

That description has nothing to do with grade or condition- it is a die variety number and rarity rating. Al Overton was an author of a bust half reference book and he listed all the die varieties for bust halves by year with O numbers. There are other O-107s but yours is specific for that year. The R-3 is just a rarity rating with R-1 being most common and R-8(9?) being unique. I do not own that particular reference book so someone else will have to tell you the details of the die variety

I typed the condition/speciman thing poorly for sure - I meant I was happy with the condition except scratches and believed it might be an 0-107 and R-3.
Anyway, the price was from a dealer who visits a club I have recently joined. He set the price. I kept going back to it because it is a beautiful coin in person (except for the scratches). I think I bought it solely because I liked it. And, from my experience, $50 isn't going to hurt me. It won't be sold anyway.
Thanks for the info on Overton.

Personally, I would have passed on that coin because of the scratches. In August I bought a very nice F12 1807 DBH that had some scratches similar to yours on the obverse for $90. Initially, I thought that I had gotten a great deal, but every time I saw that coin those scratches bothered me to no end. I ended up selling the coin for a small profit in October.
But hey, if you like it that's all that matters. It's in your collection, not mine, and certainly has a very original "look".

I think it looks pretty good for $50.
