My wife is a closet coin collector !!
seriously I found a small hoard of silver coins in her closet .
I guess she has been secretly collecting the Lord of the Rings Silver proof coins !
Now my problem is she is paying 60.00 each for these 38.61mm , 28.28 gram sterling silver 1$ coins .
Should I tell her I'm onto the secret and inform her that these coins are way over priced or keep my mouth shut and just enjoy the fact that she is collecting ?

I would keep quiet and just enjoy the fact that she is collecting... (could they also be a present you were not supposed to find?)

I dont think so ! they run across a few years . Zach My wife and I share everything as far as finances go we don't have her money and my money we have our money and I would recommend that system to everyone . and I don't want to come off like I'm complaining about her buying these coins ,, I knew she bought the one ring coin when it came out ,,but I did not know that she was collecting the series . I just wonder if she thinks they are a bargain at 60.00 each ? I personally cannot see them ever coming to that level as a collector coin ? I probably won't say anything ,, I never would have found them if I wasn't going to be getting my DSL upgrade monday ,,and was putting a few things away and moving some stuff around to make the installation easier. I just thought it was funny that she actually keeps her collection in the closet ,,when I have a real nice safe with plenty of room for them . Metalman

GO your single aren't you ? That would be certian and sudden trouble in whoville ! not to mention the cost of hiring a food taster for the next five years ! I live by the simple rule that I am the head of the house and my wife is the neck that turns me ! I think I will just put them back and let it be her secret until she has them all and brings them out to brag !

Buy her one for christmas and "ACCIDENTALLY" leave the price tag with the coin. This way, she can see what you paid, not reveal how much she has paid, and start buying future ones at hopefully a third the price.

She is apparently on a subscription from The Royal Mint for these . they seem to be dated about every two months ,, I guess I need to pick up the mail more often ! I have pretty much decided to just leave it alone for now If she enjoys the coins and wants to buy them its cool with me . I might get her to take a look on ebay and ask her if she wants to buy some of them though !

Rick, maybe now is the time to go fishing. Cast a few lines in the water and see if you get a bite. She is obviously planning on showing the collection to you after she is finished and is also concerned that you might disapprove. After all, it is your hobby and she might feel like she is intruding.
After telling her one night about your greatest conquest, let her know how much you like sharing this with her and wished she could enjoy it more. Then, some other time, ask her to look at your collection with you. Get her involved and she might just bring out her collection and share. From the sounds of it, you have the type of relationship with your darling that I have with mine, almost perfect. I just cannot share enough with her, time, hobbies, thoughts or smiles. I don't think she will ever find collecting coins interesting, but I sure wish she would.
Hmmmmm, I can see it on the forum now. Hi, I'm Metalwoman and I am new to collecting.

I say if all it takes is $60.00 every two months to make her happy (no matter if the price will probably not be there when time to sell) I say let her enjoy it. Lord knows I have bought coins that will probably never see a return more than I paid and probably have some that will never get what I paid when time to sell but I sure was happy when I got it. Atleast with these coins she has something not only she can share with you and collect it is a whole lot better than buying a $60.00 pair of shoes that she may get $1.00 for the next month at a yard sale because they hurt her feet. I had my wife collecting Panda coins from China and even though I was the one who bought them for her (and sometimes felt the price I paid was a little high) just seeing her face when she got it and us being able to share a small part of this hobby together was worth every penny

I think it is great that she is showing an interest in collecting. She may branch out into other coins and then you guys will have something very fun to share in the future. I say keep the lips sealed on this one. Mike

In this case the value in collecting is that it's something you can share. If it's something that she likes and can afford, then the price should be secondary. (And yes, I am married and would love to see my wife take an interest in collecting. Anything.)

Could you find them better priced? If you can I would tell her and help her out.

My wife said to keep quiet and not let her know that you found them. She'll show them to you when she is ready.

And now that you have found them you have given yourself ample time to rehearse your response. If it were me, I think I would be practicing admiration, appreciation, and respect tinged with a hint of wide-eyed awe.
