I've posted some pics of my 19x9-S coin. I found it about two weeks ago in a bag of 5,000 wheats. I set it aside because I couldn't tell what it was and just got around to looking at it today. My 11-year old daughter was the one who found it and she got all excited when she looked at it with her naked eye and said it was a 1909-S. I disagreed with her at the time, but now that I've looked at it under a magnifying glass and in a blown up photo, it's starting to look a little more like it might be.

So my first question is, IS this a 1909-S?

If it is, my next question is whether it retains any value at all in its poor condition? I'd love to just have it as a hole filler in my book until I can get a real one, but I'm still curious as to whether it has any value in such poor condition.

Is-This-A-1909-S-???

It is an "S" mintmark. Sadly though if it were ever a VDB it's been long worn off

I know it's an S mint. What I can't tell with certainty is whether it's an 09. The third number is almost completely worn.

It's pretty hard to tell from the image. You might be able to narrow it down a bit by looking at other years (19, 29, 39) and comparing spacing and mintmark differences (if there are any). This might be a lot of work for a low grade coin, however. Sorry.

Patrick - I've tried what you suggested, but I'm very new to this and as bad as those photos look, they're about as good as it's gonna get. I know this coin is in horrible condition, but I'd love to find out it "used to be" a 1909-S, simply so I can fill that hole in my book...it'll be a good long time before I'm going to be able to invest in a good one. I'm not going to put it in there unless I know for sure though.

Keep the opinions coming please...maybe coppercoins will be able to tell for certain what it is. He seems to be magic that way.

On second thought, if it's this subjective, I might just put it in the book anyway for the sake of my kids and let them think it's an '09. They are really excited about this new hobby and if they think they found something rare it might keep them interested. Then maybe for their birthdays in March I can buy them one in poor condition, but with a legible date, so at least it would make the coin in the book legit.

I would say that is probably a 1909-S in poor condition worth about $30

I dont know but it could be an 1919 s, 1929 s, 1939s becides 1909 s coin. I cant tell the 3 number is wore out bad.

I would try compare to those or use high power mag glass to see it.

Thanks for all the replies. I honestly don't see a 3 in it when I compare it to a 1939, but I can't quite say it looks like a 0, 1, or 2 to me either :D

I tried to get better pics of the mint mark. I'm not sure if these pics are any better, but the date looks more like a 1919-S when taken from this angle. I probably need to just give up on this coin, since it's worthless no matter what it is. I just would have loved to stumble across a key date in one of those "unsearched" bags. I was also hoping my kids would have a coin to get excited about.

In the newest picture it looks like a 3 to me. I'm just wondering how just that one spot could be worn. Maybe it was made like that to fool someone into thinking it's an 1909 S?
