I wonder if anyone else is hording nickels. After all, EVERY nickel is worth significantly more than 5 cents. I have sorted through about $800 of nickels so far and have had a lot of fun sorting through them. I am still missing 16 different nickels, 6 silver nickels and 10 other dates. I wonder how long it will take before I find a 1950-D or a 1943-D. I have found 3 Buffalo nickels but I could only read the date on one of them.

SINCE EACH NICKEL IS WORTH OVER 6 CENTS IN MELT VALUE, I THINK WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS A GOOD IDEA. IF YOU SEARCH THROUGH THAT MANY NICKELS I AM SURE YOUR 50-D WILL BE NEARING! GOOD LUCK!

If you are hoarding nickels, you may want to consider pre-1982 Canadian Nickels.
US nickels are copper-nickel, whereas pre-1982 Canadian Nickels are all Nickel. The melt value of Canadian Nickels is greater than the melt value of US nickels.

I dont know what condition you're looking for -- I have a dozen of each of those nickels.

Well I search nickles alot. I made several 60s rolls (60-69) and put them in my safe. Now I only keep the pre-60 coins. Out of $80 or so I'll get about 30 - 40 pre-60 coins on average. Is nice to find a 1939 or older coin. In the last 4 months I've only found 2 buffalo's, one with a date.

I've never found a 1950 D in circulation, and I have been looking for many years.

I've gone through thousands and thousands of dollars in nickels while I lived in Philly. The only dates I never got from circulation are 38D, 38S, 39D, 39S. I've gotten one 50D and just a handful of Buffalo nickels (mostly dateless). I hoarded all the pre-1960 also and wound up with more than 3500 of them. I wound up having to sell them because I didn't want to move them across country. Only got 10 cents per coin for them and I threw the 50D in there for the buyer. I guess I could start over.

Each weekend I usually buy 2-3 rolls of nickels to go through. This has been going on for about 3 years. I save pre-1960. I honestly don't find that many of them - so saving them is no big deal, BUT I really don't think well circulated pre-1960's nickels are going anywhere in value anytime soon. Never found a buffalo. Most exciting finds were a War Nickel and what I believe is the 1955 D/S variety. Since you can buy nickels at face anytime from the bank, I really don't hoard the post 1960 ones. I guess if you're saving them for a "rainy day"....

I have been searching Jeffersons for close to 12 years and have found many a buffalo a couple of AG Vs a whole bunch of silver (mostly in Vegas) but only 2 1950Ds both in lower grades. If I could find someone to buy my stash of pre 60 jeffersons for 10 Cents each I would be very tempted after removing the silver ones. But For the most part people are just not interested in lower grade early jeffersons. You did well mycrob

I'm a nickel hoarder, I mostly roll search pennies but for a nice change I have rolls of nickels to look at when my eyes start to get strained.
I figure as time goes by it'll be harder and harder to find the older nickels in circ. so I am pulling them now.

My inventory says I have:
17 - 1938D 23 - 1938S 14 - 1939D 17 - 1939S 12 - 1943D 13 - 1950D (6 of which are BU)
If you're interested in buying any of them, let's talk turkey.

I just started searching nickels too and keep most pre-1960's that I find. It seems to be the easiest denomination to search where there will be something for you to keep! I haven't found a Buffalo yet, but hope to one day (maybe even a whole roll?). Although, I have found a United Arab Emirates 50 fils piece. Not worth anything, but came a loooong distance to my hand.
PS - j_h_s, email sent about your inventory.

I hoard nickels too. For a reason even I don't understand, I keep every one I come across that is dated 1959 or earlier. I am especially fond of War Nickels. I also keep every 2004 and 2005 nickel I get, basically because each of the four reverses were only made for six months. Somehow that makes me think they are more unique than, say, a 1996 nickel that was made for a year. If you follow that logic, which I admit isn't very logical. I will swap out any that I find that are in better shape than what I have in my Jefferson nickel album, but otherwise they are all in tubes, and I have no idea what I am ever going to do with them. I had a big jar of pre-60 nickels, but I needed money for car insurance so they just went back to the bank. I did make sure no War Nickels made it back.
