Lincoln Cent books, are they worth the trouble? You buy the albums 2.99 each ,you search and search for 90 coins and even though there fairly new ,some are hard to find. Then you go in a coin shop and they have one for sale 8.99..It cost me more than that to drive up there today.

I understand your dilemma. Years ago I was in the same boat. I had to decide if I should keep collecting Lincoln cents or settle for a lower grade that fits my budget. The key coins are always going to be the most expensive, and when you have a series that is almost 100 years old, it can become a real challenge to find the coins you are looking for. Finding a Wheat cent these days is next to impossible.

I would consider setting a budget. It would also be in your best interest to purchase the keys first. The keys usually go one way, which is up in price.

Don't let yourself get too discouraged with high prices. Collecting Lincoln's should always be fun.

Bet he drank that $3 up fast lol. I've had an absolute blast getting my new Dansco 8100 filled up. Everything 59 up is complete w/proofs so far, time for the expensive part now. I had a harris $3 book, to me its not much fun and does not present the coins as well. I'd say those are not worth your trouble, but I'm just in love with my dansco :)

I buy those folders from 1941 thru 74, 75 thru 2007 folders . I am building 13 sets of them for ebay to try use all my extra wheat pennys I have around I bought in bulk. I did buy serval incomplete 1909 thru 1940 incomplete sets on ebay . I am building starter sets to sell on ebay to help make some money back I spent building my keeper set. Its easy to buy those complete 41 thru 74 complete folders and serval sets I got free for buying there 1909 thru 40 whitmans. I bought those extra sets to strip out semi and keys to build my keeper set. Most my sets were built back in 1960 or 1970 something or older on the wheats section. The folders were trashed or old and need upgraded.

This what I doing with my 13 sets of 1909 thru 2007 sets. I bought new folders and I am updating all with new folders and been going thru Bank boxs of coins from bank to pull all au/bu coins to install in 1959 thru 07 sections of book to update them to get them where they will buy them on ebay. The 41 thru 07 sections will sell for 35 to 50 bucks compared 8 bucks for 41 thru 58 sections in trashed folders.

I dont think you can fill wheat section of those folders from going thru bank boxs of coins. I know I went thru 500 dollars worth pennys from banks. I found maybe less 200 wheat pennys out all them pennys. They were all common 1950 or 1940 stuff . Very few s mints or low mint coins. Top coins found was 1921s, 1920s, 1919 d I found. Like I said rest of wheats were 1950 or 1940 junk. You cant fill the 1909 thru 1940 section from bank boxs. It would take maybe 10000 or 100000 dollars worth pennys to find them all if your luckey. My freind last year bought 10000 worth pennys from banks. He found 500 pre 39 cents and 3500 wheat pennys from 1940 thru 58. It took him over almost 1 million pennys to get those from bank boxs. His cool finds were 31d. 1914s 12d, No big keys ever found he told me.

If you build an set I will tell this buy the wheat pennys in bulk to get them. The 59 thru 2007 section you can get no problem from Bank boxs. The tough dates are 1968 thru 74 s mints. Rest is easy. I completed all my sets but 6 of them need 1982 small dates. They are au/bu sets on 59 thru 07 updated . I need buy more boxes to find them blazing red clean 1982 small dates. Two sets need the 1968 s , one 1972s to be done with them.

Main reason I did all that work is I needed to try get my money back building my keeper set and get rid of 13 or 14 sets of pennys I dont need. I hope I sell them all where I can start building an Mercury dime set of half dollar set.

Its hard job for sure since this project has taken me over 2 or 3 monlths to build those 13 sets and still not done. I am so sick of pennys. I may build another 50 41 thru 07 sets to use my rolls of bu coins or blazing red coins I have already. Whats stoping me I need solid date rolls of wheat pennys aslong serval 59 thru 1999 rolls to do it.

Have fun and good luck building your 1909 thru 07 set. Its lot work but I have fun doing it.

Wow! What a projeact. 13 sets requires going thru millions of penneys- I can understand how it could be tiring. But, it sounds like alot of fun to me.

Thanks for the interesting ideas. I am building a Lincoln set, and needed some ideas!

The easy way to get them is to buy a BU roll of each date. Then you would have very nice coins. They aren't that hard to find that way.

I have heard this too...are they very rare or just somewhat rare? I know I have seen them in the the 4 boxes of pennies I searched (10000 total coins) but I didnt keep them or put them aside. Is that something I should do?

1968 S - 258,270,001
1969 S - 544,375,000
1970 S - 690,560,004
1971 S - 525,133,459
1972 S - 376,939,108
1973 S - 317,177,295

Way, way back to the original post. $2.99 for a coin folder and is it worth it. To start with NO, not worth it. For one thing if your into collecting coins for a future profit, those are detramental to the future of the coins. Such a folder requires you to press a coin into a slot, usually with your finger of thumb. This leaves a really nice slimy fingerprint on the coins. Some use a rubber malet to pound them into the slots. Some coins are so worn they fall out and people see the shinny backs to the slots and realize it is glue so they wet the coin and presto, it now sticks in the slot.
All this will eventually help deminish the value of a coin. If your into this hobby for fun, again, the future of your coins will be fingerprinted, pounded, back stained coins. The usual process to make a folder is to completely coat a sheet of paper and them lay the slotted cardboard on that. Of course no one cleans off the excessive glue now shown in the slots.
If your first starting out the cost of an actual coin Album is a tuff item for sure. Many such as Dansco or Whitman run over $20 for the penny ones. However, if your collecting for fun and the future, it's a great investment, looks great, protects the coins, easily shows both sides of the coins.
Now you can get a completed set for $8.99? Not sure what you mean but if from 1909 to present, complete, something is wrong there. More than 90 coins there. I presume your referring to the latest dates only. Would this include the 72 Double Die? All 1982's? All types of 1960's? 84 Double Ear? 98 to 2000 Wide AM?
I would suggest you get a Red Book, check out https://www.coppercoins.com and a little more research on those coins. Who knows what that dealer may really have.
As to your original question again. NO, NO, NO. Do not use folders.
