Hey now, we don't want a redo of the War of 1812 here - Americans vs Canadians - do we? Only joking, you made me chuckle:-) Going forward the price of my thoughts shall be worth a minimum of 5 cents and furthermore I shall adjust that with the annual rate of inflation in order to ensure I will never end up at zero (sense)! Edit to add: Of course it goes without saying that I won't hold my breathe waiting to collect my adjusted " Two Cent" thoughts, don't want it to appear I'm violating forum regulations (again).

I'd have to fight both sides of the war. I used to live close to the border and always have felt Canada to be a second home. But that's not all... some great news came my way not long ago. We were contacted by a cousin my Dad (80 next year) had not seen since they were boys. Long story short... I found out for the first time that after my ancestors came over from Germany, unlike I thought they did not first settle in PA. They were Canadians first! Its grade "eh" information to me - I have Canadian roots!

Yes, much like you my Finnish ancestors first settled in the USA but when land came available to homestead, they moved on to Alberta.
Perhaps if a separatist movement within Western Canada is revived in the future - it's been a topic from time to time, with the suggestion of requesting (begging, considering the current price of oil?) to join the U.S. - we shall see a recycled idea to make a subtle statement by pasting 1/2 Canadian and U.S. banknotes together? Too bad we no longer circulate $1.00 though, it would cost much less.....

Hey wildflower, did you ever watch the documentary "DIss-united states of Canada", it talks about all the difference seperation movements in Canada.
Earle42, was it the Maine/New Brunswick border? That is where I am living? I only know PA for 2 things, the German ana-baptists and WIll Smith so it makes sence you would have thought that.

Back in the days of the referendum, Mr. C the PM reminded that Quebec was to assume about half of the Canadian debt if they separated, kinda half of a 20.00 bill.

@wildflower... trust me... the current condition of our government ... Alberta becoming a state would be a very big mistake right now. We have had some of our own wanting to leave. Quote:

Hey, maybe since they are redesigning our Sacajewea coin every year, next year it could mimic the Loonie REV? It had a wolf, turtle, and turkey on it (one of my favorites) not too long ago. @harmonica... I am trying to track down where they were. It was JUST recently I learned this info and my Dad did not remember the details. I know... you would think he would, but he said it was a three hour conversation over the phone so he forgot a lot of it.

Harmonica, no I haven't but it sounds interesting, I'll put it on my "look for" list.

Yeah, the grass is always greener. But on that topic, I have my own selfish interests at stake - I'd just like to flee these long cold winters. I'd promise to be a good American - while passing my time buying up Canadian coin at a reasonable price, besides ya'll would be entertained every time we said "eh"!

Funny - I grew up in the Lake Erie Snow Belt and miss the 6 months of white ground, month or so of sub-zero, lovely summers where you rarely need an AC, and scraping ice from the windshield until a week or so in June. And the closest we got to y'all was the occasional Pittsburgher saying "Y'nz."
Its also how I was able to build a decent Canada collection from circulation - close proximity meant Canadian coinage was common. Although bills, and then the Loonie, never made/makes it across the border. I had to get them on my frequent excursions across the border.
Maybe I need to find a way of Spocking my US $5 bills as a subtle statement of my missing the close proximity to the border?

Maybe the BOC should make $10 and $5 notes to satisfy this demand. Oh wait ...

What is the rule for exchanging these?
It used to be a damaged bill > 50% of the area of tbe full bill could be exchanged for a new bill.

Reminds me of something I was taught on Indonesian history class. I don't remember the exact details or year, but another party (most likely the government, since it was for taxation purposes as I remember it) forcibly cut and took away the half (or another percentage, I don't know) of their banknote, so that the people will only have part of their money left. Everybody (except for the people taking the tax, that is) got much poorer.
There might be some still existing today, but I've never seen or heard of one, not even a photo.
