*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Alright, I like creating good conversational topics so I thought I'd have a to at this one seeing how there currently isn't any but I know I can be the only person wondering about this. So here it goes: I've always enjoyed watching The Shopping Channel Coin Show, I never buy anything but I always can't help but wonder. How do they aquire their coins!?!? It seems wether it's new or old they always have massive quantities available (in most cases). Now as far as the Royal Canadian Mint goes, I have a good understanding of how things work and for the record I've been in their Master Club for a number of years... I have to ask the question, is there a double standard and special preferences for certain dealers such as larger ones like The Shopping Channel? Because I don't it very odd they have very very strict limits on many of their coins even for Master Club and the dealers I personally know of... Any insight on this topic? How can certain businesses receive extra special treatment compared to others? How do you achieve such a status? Do you think that this is a fair practice for a crown corporation? Now, I'm only speculating on this but I'd love to hear more responses and insight. Thanks in advance and I always appreciate the replies on the forum.

The host of that channel has one of the largest coin shops in Canada, and probably one of the largest inventories. The vest pocket dealers love when Steven comes to a coin show to do some shopping...

A previous RCM vp started the practice of commissioned coins, if it's your design and you pay some set up fees your allowed up to half the mintage. Apparently Canada Post is the RCM largest dealer, with the RCM recently any marketing system can occur, remember the big coin series, the RCM's add was the box was only available through their subscription.

What's interesting about this large.., amazing,..fantastic coin store up in Rich Man's Hill is that the owner gets great dips from the mint. The RCM puts out a limited edition of say ~ 20,000 specialty items and quickly sells let's say ~4000...and Steve gets to buy the rest and flogs them on TV.... Now the mint says "Sold Out"... but there are still a lot "floating around" on that station..or in their store..

It is like any business Devlec, and make no mistake, the RCM is a business... you always treat your best customer, well, the best.

Still remember when Steve started out . Used to walk around Torex buying muck and such......... He was indeed welcomed! No matter what one thinks, his success was acquired through a great deal of hard work. When you get the chance to meet him quite a decent guy.

I agree. I have met him a couple of times and one thing comes through-he is passionate about coins and coin collecting. He is a good guy to talk to about Canadian coins.

Next time you met him, can you tell him not to remove my coin from capsule and touch it with his bare hands on tv? I am always wonder what he does with the coins he touched bare hands. I would assume they wipe it clean and sell it back out?

Meeting him a few times at GTA shows, he is a cool coin guy who apparently buys a lot of stuff from dealers to stock the show and a collector to boot. With the amount of RCM coins he sells, I am almost sure those uncapsuled coins are samples, or at least I hope so.

When it comes to circulating coins you could maybe do your own bidding/buying and complete a set that he sells and do it for less money and maybe more fun in the long run. However, I will say this. If he motivates or piques interest in the hobby with his shows that is a very good thing.
I saw he had uncirculated 2005 P non magnetic pennies for $2500 each and there were I believe about nine available. I wonder how many of those are out there to be sold?

punman.. you should watch one of the show he is on. He is good at selling. I am quite surprise at their sell pitch and they usually sell out by end of their shows

I've returned two "imperfect" coins to this company.
