I found this with some other error coins I inherited and I am trying to verify what it is. It is exactly the same size as some Eisenhower dollars. Is there any other way to very that it is a blank planchet for that type of coin?    |

If it is not cupronickel clad or silver clad, then it is not an Ike planchet. It is also worth noting that a planchet will have a slightly smaller diameter than the final struck coin.

It weighs just about 24 grams (23.97)

A silver dollar planchet would weigh 26.73 g, so it could be that if your scale isn't very accurate.

Well, if that is the case, my brand new scale is most definitely off. I weighed a Eisenhower dollar on it, and it weighed 22.40 grams. I then reweighed the planchet and it now weighed 24.09. Even if the scale is off, shouldn't the weights be closer than that? |

It seems fairly accurate, and you could try calibrating it. Anyway, what I said about maybe being a silver dollar was just an idea. It could also be foreign.

Numisma, your 26.73 grm figure would be accurate for a 90% silver dollar such as a Morgan or peace but not for an Ike dollar. The 24.09 gram figure is within the tolerance range for a 40% silver Ike. (24.59 grams +/- .984 grams) |

You can test your scales accuracy... A nickel is 5.0 grams or any US bill is 1.0 grams

So I am good to assume they are Ike Silver Dollar blank planchets?

No, you cannot assume that based on weight alone. Is it a clad planchet? Did it pass the tissue test? If it is not clad, then it is definitely not an Ike planchet. If it does not pass the tissue test, then it is not a sliver clad Ike planchet. |
