The first batch of gold proofs are now gone, product is listed as unavailable as of this morning. Probably around 5,000 was sold yesterday in the first batch. The mint used to take advance orders on temporarily sold out coins, they don't now. If au goes up a tier or two before the coin comes back in stock, it's SOL.

Hmm went back on sale like an hour later... Their inventory procedures aren't very transparent.
Edit- wow it's crazy, gone again.

Quote: Is it primarily about having the new coins as soon as they are released that you are willing to pay more, or is there some other reason you like to buy directly from the US Mint? For me it's 3 reasons: 1. Usually I can't seem to find the products that I've missed for cheaper than original release price. 2. Buying from the mint typically means I'm not dealing with someone else's cherrypicked rejects. 3. If I don't keep up with them then my backlog gets huge.

I'm very similar to CelcticKnot in my reasoning
1. I know I am not getting something someone may have altered or picked through 2. My backlog is already huge, going back to 1983 on some of the moderns I am missing.
3. It usually evens out. Yes, I can get a lot of them cheaper than issue price. But a lot of others I can't. Some like the Botanical Set, the American Buffalo items, Matte Kennedy, 2012 Proof Set, etc.-- they cost me more after the fact. I don't know if it evens out or not in the long run.

Yep, those are good points CelticKnot and crazyglue! Seems the $1 Silver commems (and I assume the 1/2 dollar commems too) can be found on ebay for less a few years later, but no idea about their relative condition vs. direct from the US Mint versions.

Got a gold MT proof on back order. Gonna try to add the silver coins on Monday on the phone and see if I can save $4.95 on the shipping. Least the CSR could say is no you need to generate a new order for the silver coins. But it's good news that the bad COA only delayed them by 2-1/2 weeks. That's fast for anything by the government.

@Cascade
I'm going for both, but in my opinion, the proof looks like it will turn out really nice with the contrast between the design and the fields.

I believe the expression is "in like Flynn" (as in Errol Flynn). "In Like Flint" is a movie. But I'm in like Flynn too! Will probably pick up both unc and proof.
