I roll hunt a lot, getting rolls from the bank. I rotate which bank I go to, so I often don't see the same tellers. I'd say about 20-25% of them will ask me if I have an account with them, and then of those that ask that question, about 75% of tehm will actually ask for the account number, type it into the computer and check. Now, for those tellers that know me, this doesn't happen.
I'm just wondering how many of you have tellers ask you if you have an account in order to get rolls?
Because I get asked often enough about having an account, I only have gone to a bank I DIDN'T have an account with once and got lucky. The teller didn';t ask the question and so I got my rolls.
Do any of you go to banks with which you don't have accounts and if so, what is your success rate of getting rolls?
I'm thinking of trying something- go to some different banks I don't have accounts and seeing what I can get without an account number. If they ask if I have an account, I was thinking of saying that I am thinking about opening an account but wanted to see what kind of customer service I get first. It might be interesting to see if I get more cooperation and get the rolls I want.
Or I could just open an account at a few more banks, but I can only dilute my money so far and most banks have minimum balance requirements before they start charging a monthly fee (on my MONEY!)

It all depends on the tellers, some don't want to get out of their chair if they don't have to....
I have accounts at 5 different banks: my main bank which handles our checking acct. my dump bank which has a coin free counter one bank just because they have good CD rates and 2 banks just to pick up boxes of pennies and the occasional halves.
I've found that most banks offer free checking accounts with no minimum balance, where as most savings accounts have about a $300 minimum before you start paying fees.

I'm going to my bank tomorrow, hopefully, to get a few rolls of dimes. I was also wondering about going to banks that I do not have an account with. If I walk in with $10 and ask for two rolls of dimes they should do it. Why wouldn't they?

As stated "some tellers don't want to get out of their chair if they don't have too"- that has happened to ME twice. Most consider ME taking ALL their halves off them as a service and glad to be rid of them. I get 4 boxes every other Thursday from a bank I don't have an acct with- they have never asked but I started off that relationship by relieving their vault of almost $3000 in halves that were stuck in limbo for some reason. I go to lots of banks I don't have accts with but that is the only one that orders boxes for ME- they have free checking I just haven't taken the time to open one- another branch was where I first had a lazy teller, I know they've got halves in the vault I need to open checking there sos I can get them. HH Mark BTW I'm looking for halves that noone wants, if they don't want to get rid of them- then keep them.

I'm the person doing the informal "Nickel Project", so I buy lots of rolls. I also try to check at least $200 in halfs every day, and I work a $25 box of pennies every 10 days or so. I have an account at only one bank, but there are 15 branches of that bank in the city, so I take my change back to different branches all of the time; I try to "mix it up". I buy all of my rolls from banks I don't have an account with, and there has only been one time I was rejected, and that was a very small community bank that I was probably wiping out of all of their nickels.
The only other time that I had a "close encounter" is at a bank that I had had no trouble, until the time I requested a nickel box AND a cent box. The teller asked me what they were for, and I told her personal use. She wanted to write down my name, which I gave her. Then she gave them to me. I had never seen that teller there before, and if I see her again I will go to a different bank. I will still go there, as everybody else there is great to deal with.
The good news is there are probably about 100-125 banks within 20 miles of home, so I will probably never run out of places to go!

bmanofnbc,
That is one thing that can be very aggrivating, a lazy teller. They will lie to you just so they don't have to get up.

I just bought over 100 bucks worth nickels from well fargo. The bank teller never did mark off the other persons account number. I may go my other wells fargo bank and talk with head bank teller to ask if thats common practise to sell coins without removing the account numbers.
Thats bad since other guys can steal the other peaple acounts . Take my advice dont write on any coin rolls I dont after buying those coin rolls. I not doing it and will dump into machices .

I opened an account with Wachovia last year because tellers at banks would sometimes give me hassle when I asked for rolls of the dollar coins. At the time Wachovia was also giving $50 to anyone opening a checking account (I always like free money). You have to keep a balance of $100 or they charge a fee, but I consider that as working capital and a small price to be able to exchange coins without cost or hassle. The only drawback to Wachovia is that they are a "newer" bank - so no rolls of halves and probably little chance of finding silver.
