I have my ideas but I'm curious what all of you think... what do you think the future trends will be like, what will be hot, what will not be hot? Let's look for stuff outside the box, I think we all assume that key date coins and high grade gold will continue to rise as usual but what else... I think the new lincolon cent will bring in some new collectors and possibly have an impact on key dates but I think that their anticipated impact upon the hobby is for the most part being over rated. What else is going to happen? What sleepers are out there? How about 1927-S SLQs?

Off the top of my head, I agree with a number of Coin Community members in thinking that 3CN's are undervalued. They did not produce that many for all that long. On the other hand, I have been thinking this for a while now while prices have been fairly settled. Personally, it is my favorite coin and greater demand for the good one's happens to be a double edged sword. The one's I have become more valuable but if they go up too much they will be out of my price range even in the common dates.

I predict that traders on wallstreet will start buying up all the 1959D Lincoln "tail on 9" cents as lucky pieces against statistical fat tails. This in turn will cause a savvy investment firm to buy up the worlds supply of "Tail on 9" Lincolns. These Lincolns will be stored in an abandoned ICBM silo in North Dakota but in the same way as a bonded warehouse. In fact that will be their motto--"we may be abandoned but we're bonded." (Followed in small letters--"by welfare checks from American taxpayers")

They will then sell digital shares in the "Tail on 9" ETF fund. Then one day, an "old time trader"--at least 25 years old, will point out that digital data might be destroyed if earth got blasted by a totally awesome solar flare ejection. "It would be like this housing mess. Like, who would ever had guessed that lending money to people who can't pay it back would become a fat tail?"

"He's right! We want paper shares! Buy the paper and not the digitals!"

On the Two Cent Piece. I understand the question and it seems that what applies to the 3CN should apply to it as well. i.e. undervalued and overlooked. However, I don't think this is true and here's why (any thoughts/comment appreciated). As a type I think the 3CN nickel is much more "accessible" and will have an easier time getting the popularity needed to bring the prices up. The 2 cent piece is a much busier piece and in my opinion much harder to grade. I was turned on to the 3CN because it's a great looking coin and when I was new to the hobby it was one that I felt fairly competent at grading. I just think the 3CN has a better chance of gaining in popularity with new and old folks in the hobby before the 2 cent piece does and as we all know demand is what drives up the prices.

I'm worried that our Mint will continue producing massive amounts of commemoratives, baby sized dollars, more items like the Bicentennial Quarters, State Quaters and eventually distroy this hobby as they did with stamps. To many varieties all at one time could have the opposite effect of creating more collectors. Many get irritated when they realize they can never accumlate all the varieties and just give up.
Speaking of Postal stamps. I was in a local Post Office yesterday. They had a sign saying you can now order the $0.41 cent stamp with your own or other family members on them. I asked if I could have one made with Dracula on them. Answer: As long as you want to pay you can have anyone on them. And so goes stamp collecting.

I think the Mint will form a strategic alliance with Willy Wonka and come out with Everlasting Gobstopper Coins.

These coins when eaten will not only change size but also denomination. So it will begin as a large Morgan dollar and slowly fluctuate to a half, Half Cent, large cent, etc. until it finally gets to Three Cent and Half Dime.

This will be appreciated by parents who have children who never finish all of their candy. Whatever is left can then be spent on new treats the following day.

I don't see what's special about a coin that was made to be hoarded and not used as money. I agree, there are way too many commemoratives out there, as just carl stated. The "real" special coins, to me, are the common coins that were supposed to be used, but weren't. The Half Dollar needs to be put back into circulation, and it's time for the Mint to change the design. Those are my opinions.

I agree with some of the things said.

However, the Statehood Quarters and Presidential dollars are fostering alot of interest by beginners and younger collectors. If your aim in collecting is enjoyment of collecting and the process, then these are very interesting!

Agreed. Along with sparking interest in coin collecting, the Quarters & Dollars are also a great way to get people more interested in American history; I'd say that's a good thing.

Statehood Quarters were hit because the quarter widely circulates, making it easy to collect.

The Presidential dollars? Gotta kill the paper dollar if it is ever going to have the same success. That said, I kinda like them, and appreciate the Historical aspect.

The Half Dollar was killed when they made the decision to leave silver in them for five years after it was removed from the others. Instant hoard piece that disappeared from circulation. People adapted with two quarters and so it is today.

Wow, jbuck, you know your facts; I forgot to consider those points about the Half Dollar.

Alright, as for a future trend I'd like to see...the mint should stick with a simple, lasting design for the penny after the 2009 commemoratives come and go. Although the 200th/100th anniversery is appropriate, the Mint changes things up too often...

I agree TX, the penny should have another run of 50 years....but I seriously doubt the Mint will allow that the way things are going. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of the State Quarters and I have the first 4 Prez Dollars but I do thing they've reached there limit with the commerorative-1-year-set-thingies. I am not a fan of the 2009 Lincoln and champion the idea of leaving the Obverse alone and changing the reverse permenately--for the next 50 years. Keep the tradition alive!

I have to say I am with you on this one. I think continuing the "fifty year" tradition (50 Year Wheat, 50 Year Memorial, etc) has more meaning. Bring us just one new reverse to use for the next fifty years.

However, the winds speak to me and say that after 2009, the One Cent coin is gone. I could be wrong, but it is the feeling I get.

I wouldn't put it past the mint to have a 50 states program for the penny. Or how about one penny design for every county in America. There are 3077 counties (or parishes in LA or boroughs in Alaska). Even if uou only release 50 different county designs per year, the program could last 62-63 years, spanning generations of collectors. You simply would have to pass the collection on for it to ever be completed.

But back to the main topic of the thread:

What will be hot: Keys/Semi-keys of all denominations, silver, gold, 1909 Indian cents, 1909 Lincoln cents.

What might cool off: Proof sets, mint sets, common coins
